Rental car without credit card

I know this question has come up often, however has anyone her rented a car at the Long Beach airport without a credit card, and how does that work?

We used a debit card in May, and it was fine.

what company did you rent from???

I think it was Avis (maybe alamo) We reserved the car thru Costco.com. They had the best deals.

Beware though....sometimes they will put a several hundred dollar "hold" on your debit card while you have the car. This did not happen on our last trip, but has happened in the past. Once you turn the car back in, they credit your account.

I have rented several times from Alamo using a debit card, and in fact just did this for the trip I took this past weekend. The one stipulation they have for debit cards is that you have to be able to provide information on your departing flight, presumably so they'll know you'll return the car.

As for Avis, don't even try. I got stranded at LGB on a previous trip when they cancelled my reservation for lack of a credit card and had to take a taxi instead.

just double checked and it was Alamo that we used for our trip in May, when we flew into Long beach

I've never done it at LGB but Enterprise will let you use one as well. They do require a hold on the card though. I think last time it was $200.

Thanks guys so helpful.... we have used enterprise in the past and they have put a hold on our debit card which is no problem. That was at SNA but I was curious about LGB.

Yep, Alamo will just ask to see your return ticket. It can even be an email confirmation on your phone. And they do not hold any extra funds. Highly recommend them!

If you are using a debit card they hold funds (varies) on it and it does a credit check at the same time. If you are below 600 it will decline you for a rental.
