Rent/Transfer Question

Hello All! We just purchased *** Points at *** and have *** 2009 Points for use with a FEB UY. Can I transfer or rent these points or do I have to bank them? Also can someone explain to me why there are so many variation on the rent board? If DVC owners can use their points at all DVC resorts why the price differences? For example, if I wanted to stay at BLT why would I pay $11/12 per point from a BLT owner when I can buy cheaper points and still apply them at BLT. Am I making any sense?

First off, Welcome Home! I edited your post to remove resort and specific number of points, as it could be construed as an offer to rent, which we only allow on the Rent/Trade board.

With a February 2009 use year, you have until the end of September to bank your points. The unbanked 2009 ponts are good for a stay through January 31, 2010.

Banked points can not be transferred, but you can make a reservation for someone and rent the reservation.

There are many reasons for the differences in point prices. Some may be distressed points that have passed their banking deadline and need to be used or a member may simply need cash in a hurry. Another thing would be if someone has points at a home resort that someone wants to use to make a reservation during the 11 month window, those points are usually a little bit more han others.

Thank you Chuck for responding so quickly. I've read about tranferring points and that seems rather straight forward. Renting points seems a little tricky. What do if you've been paid for the reservation, but the other party cancels and it past the banking time limit. Is it a too bad situation for the renter? Do renters have the ability to upgrade rooms upon check in?

renters should not be able to upgrade upon check-in. If the owner cancels the reservation, basically the renter is out of luck. Rental transactions are basically based upon trust. If the renter cancels, most owners consider it a final transaction and do not refund.

It is very important to have a contract between the parties that spells out obligations and policies for both. Disney/DVC will not intervene on behalf of either party.

DVC is a timeshare - "upgrades" are not available with DVC points reservations as may be case with regular cash hotel reservations. A reserved villa would have to be taken out of service for emergency maintenance or some other unforeseen situation and no other villa of same size available in order to get upgraded - rarely happens.

If your points are transferrable than a transfer of points to another

DVC member ( transfers are not possible with non-members )

is usually much less trouble / worries

than making a reservation with your points for either a member or non-member

to rent from you. You are allowed to make 1 transfer per year of either points

out of your DVC account or of points into your DVC account. If you transfer

points out the other DVC member handles everything from that point on ( ie

making reservations using those transferred points ); if you transfer points

into your account you handle making reservations or banking for future use

Finally some information on transferring of points. I've been searching the boards for hours and my brain is tired. I understand that with the rental of points the member who is renting out the points, makes the reservation for the renter and then rents to him the reservation. If it is a transfer, the points move from one members account to the other. Here is where I'm totally confused. Every where I've seen transfer mentioned, it says that it is prohibited by DVC rules for money to change hands for this transaction. So a perfect stranger is supposed to transfer their valuable points to you for free? Why would anyone do that? Here is my situation. We promised 3 young men that we would take them to Disney if they all attained the rank of Eagle Scout. Looks like they'll hit this goal in late February. The only realistic time to take them to Disney is Spring Break 2010 before they graduate, get jobs etc. However, we just borrowed some of our 2009 use year points for our July trip. We have a Dec use year, so we just stayed in a 2BR on 2008 points (boosting with some from 2009 and a few banked from earlier). We're a little short (ok a lot) for March/April 2010 in a Treehouse Villa (which would be perfect for this trip). DH is interested in "renting" the additional points we will need. It certainly would be easier to transfer points from someone else's account and book it as one, than to use my points for 2 nights and then have someone else have to make a separate reservation for me for the rest of my stay and try to knit it all together. That seems insane. Do people REALLY not take money for a transfer like this? I don't really know how this works and how I should approach searching for what I need? Anyone?

Yes, it's true that the documents members sign at purchase say points have no value and compensation should not be made for transfers. Technically, points represent an interest in a deeded lease and thus, in and of themselves, points have no value. I've paraphrased because I do not have the exact POS (Position Offering Statement) language handy.

That said, I highly doubt anyone does a transfer for free unless it is going to a very good friend or family member.


IMO, DVC / MS operate on a "Don't ask, Don't tell" basis as far as point transfers go. The statement in the POS keeps Disney off the hook in the event of a transfer dispute. Transfers are final, non-reversible transactions. If there is a dispute the parties are on their own to resolve it. Disney/DVC/MS will not get involved - since points have no value and the POS says no compensation should be offered, there is no reason for a dispute, lol.

Many members transfer points. It's a relatively common transaction and I'm quite sure $$ changes hands for 99.9% of them. Just keep in mind the above paragraph if you decide to go that route, do your due diligence and be sure you and the other party on are on the same page regarding terms before any $$ change hands.

AFAIK, there have not been any disputes over transfers reported on the DIS.
