So... Periodically I have searched the rent/trade forum. In the past I have made a deal for points to be transfered into my account so we could book a larger villa and bring the grandparents along with us on a trip that wouldn't have been possible otherwise. It seems to me that there a lot of people who end up with a lot of points that expire within a few months where there is little to no availability left to even book a reservation.

Do people not realize their expiration dates? Or have life changes that happen? I'm not trying to be judgmental of others... Or maybe it's just my frugal mindset.... But to me DVC points are too valuable to be waiting to the last minute so they don't expire. Availability is difficult enough sometimes for personal trips... Let alone rentals. Why are there always so many posts with points expiring within 3-5 months?

I have wondered that too when I look at Rent/Trade. Sometimes Im in awe of them that they have so many points they cant use lol. Ive never been in that position. We own 420 points since 2007 and I have never left one point on the table lol

Just a wild guess but I think more than 50% of the owners have little or no idea what the purchased.

Wow. Do you think its that many. Imagine if more knew. The availability at 11 and 7 months would be much harder.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that wondered this. I felt like i was being judgemental after posting. Personally, if I knew i might be in the boat of not using my points, for 1 I would probably reach out to friends and family first with enough time for them to book, or call David's rentals and get what i could for them.

When I knew we were going to take the grandparents, I started looking for points I could transfer in and it took a while. I had to take more points than I wanted too.....as transfers are so limited....no member wants to waste their one transfer unless its worth it. It was a lot of sifting through large points with very little time to use them and little availability.

We listed "cheap/expiring" points after we closed on a resale contract that we weren't able to use and the UY was coming up soon. So some renters got some really cheap points and we made out as well, win win!
