rent a car size?

Hi we will be staying at por in a couple of weeks last minute trip.
we are trying to do everything as cost effective as possible.

we are a family of 4, 2 adults and 2 teens 13 and 14.
since we are trying to do this trip on the cheaper side
what is the smallest car should we rent. my dh wants to
rent a compact since we are only probably going down
with carry on's that NOW will be checked as luggage.
would we fit in a compact car?

I would go for an intermediate. Check the car rental sites, they will tell you what the capacity for each class of car is. The price difference between a compact and an intermediate is minimal. National and Alamo have some 20.00 off coupons. I am sure the other sites have some specials running, but, Alamo and National seem to have the best prices.

we have done a compact before, but its tight. We usually get a midsize. I checked prices the other day and national and thrifty had the best prices on midsize. For the thrifty I just went through southwest airlines site and it was coming up about $80 plus fees for our week. We went with National because it was only about $10 more for the week, but because we are emerald we get to pick our own car.

Remember rental car companies tend to size smaller then you think....

I once got to watch the most entertaining scene in the National Garage at MCO. Mom, Dad and a few kids were trying to CRAM stuff into the TINY car they had reserved. Mom was cursing at Dad "I told you we wouldn't fit" Dad screamed back that "The guides all say to reserve the smallest cars because they don't ever have them and you will get a free upgrade" The man getting in the car next to me and I just stopped to watch.

Dad told mom that there was no way in you know where he was going to pay what they wanted for an upgrade and mom called him some names that can't be repeated on the DIS.

After a few minutes I left, but my votes were on mom winning and dad paying. They were NOT going to fit in that car!
