Renos for rides: What do they actually do?

I know there is painting, new techno stuff but anyone ever seen the rides being re-done or have photos of before after etc?
My ds is really into the whole thing of comparing what Disney does to their rides. The Haunted Mansion rehab fascinated him and he rode it ten times last week! Got it memorized!
