Is there a certain timeframe that you have to renew your ap's to get the renewal rate? And does the new start time start the first day you buy them or the first day you use them? Thanks!

When you renew an AP the date of expiration will become the renewal date and be valid a year from the expiration of the original AP. I believe you can renew up to a month after expiration, but again the date will remain the same as the original expiration. This is why some choose to not renew, but purchase a new AP if there is a length of time between their WDW vacations.

Actually, if you look at it, the renewal rate discount ($93 on reg AP) is less than buying a new AP ($100 discount on regular AP). Plus as the OP pointed out, a new AP wouldn't go into affect until you used it the first time.

It just makes more sense to always buy a new one. ;)

The OP was asking if a renewal AP would "start" when used the first time. As I said, the expiration date will just be a year after the old expiration date. It won't matter when it is used the first time. Just making sure for clarification that all is clear here. Thanks!

Good thing I asked! I assumed the expiration date would be one year after you use the new one. Otherwise, it doesn't seem worth it. We got 3 uses out of this ap. Unless I can get 3 uses, I don't want to buy it. Thanks for your response!

Renewing vs. buying a new AP depends on your circumstances. In some cases, it does make sense to renew.

The DVC discount is less on a renewal ($93 vs $100), but the base price of an AP renewal is about 10% less than the price of a new one ($408 vs $448). With tax, the discounted AP is $370.62, the discounted renewal is $335.48 so you save $35 by renewing. However, a renewed AP will have the same expiration date (plus one year) so it only makes sense to renew if you are going to use the renewed AP soon after the old one expires.

This was the case for us back in May. DH's AP expired just before our trip so we opted to renew it this time and saved $35.

Do you renew by calling member services? I am thinking renewing will be better value as we have a trip planned for next May and possibly early next December and our passes run out the end of this December so the discount would be better than having to pay for a brand new AP as we don't then anticipate being back in WDW til 2010.

I renewed on line at the Passholder's site. It "knew" I was DVC, and got the discount. We printed out the receipt, and had no problem getting the real pass at MGM.

I renewd through MS, no problem. I have the confirmation code. Byt I am thinking that I shouldn't have renewed as I just realized that our summer 08 trip will end 2 days after my expiration. I have not used the code yet to get the new pass. Can I call MS, pay the extra $35 and change to a new, rather than a renewed pass? DW is getting a new one.

I'm not sure if MS will be able to help you but I hope so. We had a similar problem and Guest Services at the MK helped me.

My DH's AP had expired. I usually handle all the renewals/new purchases but this time he was going to the park before me. He still remembered the good ol days of renewals activating upon first use instead of the anniversary date and didn't listen to me when I told him to buy a new AP rather than renew. The CM allowed me to switch his to a new AP.:thumbsup2

Thanks! I figured that I could take care of it when we get to the parks, but i will try MS tomorrow first.
