THAT's what makes it a "renewal" of the current AP.
(Anything else -with different dates- would make it a "new" AP.)

Which means that unless you plan to go soon after renewal, you are likely better off buying a new one for the next trip.

We go every ~6 months. We get 3 trips out of 1 AP. Then wait until the next trip and buy again. We get 6 trips out of 2 APs. If we renewed, we would only get 5 trips. The extra trip is worth more than the discount on renewing.
