Removing tall trees?

There are three very tall oak trees in the back corner of our yard that we would like to have taken down. The tree closest to our house leans towards the house and makes me nervous! Is there any way that we can have them taken down in a more economical way? We had a local tree company out for a quote, and they wanted 10k to take them down!! My friend thinks the wood would be worth some money.

Did that price include grinding up the stumps and removing all wood? Where I live it would probably cost around $5-6000 for that work.

We just spent $1K to have one tree taken down.

A few years ago, we had a large tree fall during a storm and to have it taken out, plus to have some other old stumps in our yard ground out cost about $2K.

So $10K might sound a little high and I would get some other estimates. But I would also expect that would cost at least $5K or more, depending on their size.

Hi Tink we just had a quote to remove 4 trees and the stumps for $1100.
Neighbor behind us has 6 trees taken down and her cost was $1000 but they did not grind the stumps.
So shop around!

I would subscribe to Angies list and see what other people have to stay about other tree removal companies in your area.

You might find someone on Freecycle willing to cut the tree down for the wood(my DH has cut trees down for the wood) but then you would be stuck with the stump and figuring out what to do with the smaller limbs.

But then you would probably be stuck if that person dropped the tree on Your house or fence (or the neighbors)

I am wondering, are these trees accessible with a cherry picker? If not, and the tree company has to climb to cut down the tree, it will definitely cost more. That being said, I still think 10K is a very high quote (but I am not sure about prices in your area!!!)

I also have huge oaks on my property. I had one that we were thinking of having removed. I got at least 3 estimates and I have to say, the prices ranged from 1200.00 to 2500.00 (not including the stump, but that can be grinded for about $150.00). So, I would recommend getting several estimates if possible. Also, beware and check out each company's license, insurance, etc!

My husband cut down a tree today which fell toward my son rather than away from both of them.

Professionals use ropes to secure trees so they won't fall on people or property, and they should have their own insurance. It's worth the expense to have the work done by professionals. Costs can vary widely, but the cheapest may not have insurance, so ask.

I have a home that had many, can I say Many very tall (90-100') , never trimmed or maintained Oak Trees on my property...over the years I have paid about 15000 total for their removals...
Earlier this year I did 2 that were on my front lawn. I hired a company that charged me 3500, including the stump grinding....can I say never again...they were the cheapest estimate I had gotten....they dropped HUGE sections like I have never seen before, they ruined three shrubs totally and wrecked my lawn with huge indents and messes, one sprinkler head was damaged and worst off, they decided in their infinite wisdom that a decorative rock wall was in their way (which wasnt they were just lazy) and they'd just "put it back together"...... Needless to say I got a reduced rate, made a complaint to the owner and had them put the wall back together, twice actually... (and they did not do it the same way as it was a custom wall...talk about aggravation)...
And this was a reputable company that does many jobs locally....(my usual guy was so backed up and not available for weeks)
well, it was a mistake and I still say you get what you pay for,,,,I got a sub par job and was very unhappy with the whole thing, would not ever use them again or recommend them...........
so ask around OP and Good Luck!!!

Just make sure you hire someone professional. A good friend of ours was helping his Dad cut down some trees in his Dad's yard. The Dad was very handy and had done tons of yardwork and treework in the past. They were cutting down a large pine tree and the tree trunk suddenly broke in half and fell the other way. The Dad was crushed & killed instantly. Well worth 10 grand in my book to pay someone to do it for you, our friend will have that horrific image in his mind for the rest of his life. Just horrible!

We had one tree taken out last year. It was a Bradford Pear and probably not nearly as big as those Oaks. It had split in half so half was already down but it was a mess. They charged just under $800 but didn't grind down the stump nearly enough. I would say $1000 to $1500 sounds about right for each tree unless they're really huge and then the sky's the limit!

from North Olmsted. We used Sweat Brothers Tree Service in Avon Lake a couple years ago. They were alot cheaper than the other quotes and we were very happy with their work taking down our large maple. A few of our neighbors have used them too with no problems.
