Removing Acrylic Nails - ????

Hi

I am having surgery soon and will need to remove my acrylic nails.

What are your own nails like after wards? How long before they return to "normal"?

Trying to time all this so I get them off before surgery (beginning of June) and have them looking decent for a wedding Father's Day Weekend.........

I got stuff from the place that did my nails. She didn't charge me anything. I think it was pure acid tone (not sure if I spelled that right). I also used it to remove super glue that spilled on my counter tops.

You can buy acetone at a beauty supply shop. I usually can pry mine off, but I do my own and they don't stay on as well as professionals. My nails are pretty thin to begin with, and after I take my acrylics off they are dry and thin and peely. You may need to gently buff them.

I put my own on to keep myself from biting my real nails. I use Crazy Glue, and after they start growing out I can pry them off at the cuticle end. If you use the acetone, the beauty supply shop should be able to tell you how long to soak in it, or it should say on the bottle. I don't think it's very expensive.

I did have mine taken off at the salon this way, and the stylist still needed to chip away at them with nail nippers to get them completely off. It sounds painful, but it's not.

You can remove them after soaking with acetone, but that is sometimes not easy. Afterward, they are usually thin and rough. The thickness depends on your former nail tech. You can text much more easily without them. Good luck with your surgery. I never had to remove mine for surgery. Never heard of that.

I used acetone, took them right off. My nails took a few months to get back to normal, but I was lucky. My co-worker took hers off at the same time, her nails are still messed up and it's been years now....like 7 years or something like that....she still has weird things going on with her nails.

because of the filing and stuff they do to your nails when applying the acrylics, the nails are really thin and fragile once the acrylics are removed. It will take a few months until they are back to normal - how long depends on how fast your nails grow. I always had to keep them trimmed really short while they were in transition.

Okay this is going to sound crazy but do you know what TSP is? You can get it at Home Depot or Lowes. We use it to scrub down walls before we paint. Any time I used it with Acrylic nails it lifted them right off. No prying required! At the time it made me nuts but when I purposefully used it to take them off it was a breeze much easier then acetone.

If it were me and I wanted them to look decent for Father's Day I'd take them off now to give them time to strengthen up again.

I would take them off now, if you want them to be in okay shape by Fathers Day. And even then it depends on how fast your nails grow. I had a ridge on my nails untill they grow out. They were also very thin, I had to keep them very short.

I strongly recommend against using TSP to remove acrylic nails.

Trisodium phosphate is a very strong cleaner and can cause burns when mixed according to directions. Wear rubber gloves, protective clothing and eye protection. Do not allow the trisodium phosphate solution to touch the skin or make contact with your eyes.

Skin contact: Wash with soap and water. If redness occurs, discontinue use.
Eye contact: Flood with plenty of water and seek medical attention promptly.
Strong trisodium phosphate solutions can discolor metals and degloss paint. Do not use on linoleum or similar surfaces. Use great care around stained wood as damage to the finish will occur. Protect adjacent surfaces with plastic and masking tape.

When I get mine taken off, I use OPI nail envy. Helps them to be a bit stronger until they grow out on their own.

Whatever you do, don't be tempted to pull them off, and don't let the nail tech do that either. Make sure to soak them=less breakage.

Actually removing my nails is my choice. The surgeon told me I only had to have a light nail color.

I am having double knee replacement and it will be WEEKS before I can get back to the nail place. I don't want to ask a friend to drive me even though I know they would - I need them for so many other things........

Think I will get them off this week and see how it goes.

I wish I had known how to take those things off! The lady that worked with me used a nut cracker kind of apparatus to pop them off. It was painful! I never got them again after that experience.

So now I am hearing that my real nails will hurt for several days after taking off the acrylic - any truth? And if so what did you do to relieve the pain?

Mine didn't hurt, they did ache for a while right after but a few hours later they were fine.

I wouldn't say hurt, but they may be tender for a few days. Like you wouldn't want to hit them against a door or something like that. Typing, ect you should be fine.

Mine actually hurt more when I first had them done. I remember them just being a little tender while at the salon, but by the time it was over I was fine.
