Relocating to Washington D.C.

I would NOT recommend PG County maryland.

This is where my parents live. It has been home since 1986 that they are beyond caring to move to any place better. Their house is nice, but I can't stand the area myself. Just isn't my cup of tea.

They have been burglerized 2 or 3 times and finally got an alarm system.

Very much unrecommended!

They are at a convenient location though. But not a place I'd recommend moving in 2009.

Welcome to HQ! I’m also a female officer and have been at CGHQ for 8 years. I’m married with kids so what I like for an area to live in is not what you’d be looking for! Most single folks like Alexandria or the city of DC. I know some people who are pretty happy with Arlington too. You really have to stay within the beltway to have a commute of under 20 minutes. You’ll probably be going to work between 0630 and 0730 and traffic will be okay at that point. Traffic at the end of the day is always bad. Most people at HQ use metro or car pool. Metro is annoying because the HQ shuttle. I highly recommend van pools if you can find one since you can use transit benefits for it.

Check the HQ classified boards to see if anyone at HQ is renting their homes. Your sponsor should be able to provide you with that info.

Let me know if you want to know anything! You should have a sponsor to help you, but I’d be happy to answer anything as well.

Thank you all for the quick responses so far, and thanks Dad for starting this! I would never had thought to ask here. My houseing allowance will be over $2000 so not too worried about the money. What time does traffice start in DC. 6am, 7am, ...? We have to be into work early anyways, so not too worried about traffic, we're from ATL!! ;)

Serious traffic does not start until after 7:00-7:30. If you refer to a map, I can make it from Columbia, MD to the Naval Research Lab in 35 minutes if I leave home by 7:00 or earlier. After 7:30 it's 60-90 minutes.

Very cool, thank you, I have a while til I transfer, and with having a large dog iit s a little more complicated then just me. So, I wanted to start looking. I have found some nice places in Alexandria and Arlington, so that is good to know. The times you gave me about traffic sounded about right. I was thinking leaving around 6 to get to the office, so very cool. I will worry about parking at HQ once it gets closer, and the carpooling is good to know about, I would really like to stay away from the metro b/c I had heard about the shuttle from other coasties. =) I will keep you in mind for sure as it gets closer. Thanks for responding. :)

This answered my question about traffic, thank you very much, that was about what I was guessing. :)

I knew I could count on the Dis-Family for information and help.:thumbsup2

My DH works at the Pentagon and we live in the City of Alexandria. We love it here. We chose to be a bit outside of Old Town, but we have several single friends that love it there. We also have a friend at Pentagon Row and one in Clarendon. All love their locations.

Good luck!

Alexandria, Arlington, and DC.

Clarendon (within Arlington) is the "hip" place for singles. Ballston is also great and on the Metro but not sure how dog-friendly it is.

I work at the Navy Yard so I'm just a bit "upstream".

Gridlock starts at about 7:00 p.m., but IMO traffic starts getting "busy" anywhere from 6:00-6:30 a.m. I make sure I work 6:00 to 2:30 to avoid all that. That's the good think about working in a military environment--they are much more acceptable of really early hours than the corporate world is.
When you get more specific about your areas, you will get a LOT of opinions on where to live.
This is great, will be alot of help. =)
