I don't think anyone can make a proper religious affiliation or debate it properly until they're 18+. You always hear middle school aged kids or early high schoolers saying "Oh I'm athiest woooooo" not really even knowing what it means but only saying it because other people are. I know my views on everything changed drastically from 6th grade to now.

I'm not trying to start an argument, I just don't think you should tell someone else what is right and wrong.

I went to a public middle school. And the Catholic HS around here only give scholarships to Catholic school students in 8th grade that were going to a Catholic HS. So I didn't qualify

I knew as soon as I saw the header of Religion that shortly there would be a heated debate. Relegion cannot go without that because people have such strong views that differ in so many ways.

True. I love the debate threads because I get to see other people's views and their stands on different issues.

Also to continue what Sam was saying most younger kids basically are going on what there parents have raised them on. I could ask my 10 year old brother right now what religion he is and I am 100% sure he would say Catholic. Then I could ask him so what does the Catholic faith mean to you and he wouldn't know what to say. Guaranteed. He is just going on what my parents have taken us to and raised us on.

Maturity does NOT solely come from age. It also comes from life experiences. Have I matured a lot from when I was 15? Yes! But I know I could hold a debate then.

I know that Jenny (BabyPiglet) is only like 15 or 16 and I thought she was an ADULT when I saw her write on the community board until I came and saw her over here. I think she can handle a religious debate.

I'm also older than most of the people on this board, since I'm 19. However, I would never say "I'm older than you so I know this or that." I'd give advice on what I have gone through in my life, since I am probably more likely to have gone through more experiences than a 15 year old. I wouldn't tell them that their opinion is irrelevant because of their age.

I never said there was. I was just saying that younger people are more impressionable. Some people are more mature than other at a young age, but most aren't. I think most people here are though, I mean because we love Disney and we're not afraid to say it!

My friends, for the most part, are like...agonists.

My best friend though is Catholic...I think...

Two of my friends are muslim. One's an athiest. One's catholic. Two are Jewish. One is a Baha'ist. One is a Sikhist, and the last one (but not least) is a Buddhist.

I don't think there is an age restriction on any type of debate, but what I was trying to say is that most younger kids are exploring these type of things at the ages of like middle school and are going solely on what they were raised to believe from their parents beliefs. And this is definately not 100%, because there could be a devout Christian at the age of 9 that really knows what there faith is all about, but the majority of the time that is not the case.

Ok, I understand better now. It's true that the younger you are the more impressionable you are but I think by the time high school rolls around a young person should be able to decide for themselves where they stand on religion. Being 18 has nothing to do with what you believe in. Throughout their lives people's beliefs constantly change. You could be an athiest at 18 but at 40 become a Christian (or the other way around). Life is a constant growing process where you learn new things everyday. In that case, age is really nothing but a number.

Oh I totally agree. I am a Christian primarily because that is how I was raised. I have questioned whether God really exists, but I decided that He does. I would never expect a young child to have their own full belief system. Around the age of 14 or 15 though I think a person can determine for themselves what they TRULY believe without listening to their parents or their peers.

When I was 13ish I thought I was atheist when I didn't really even know when it meant except for you didn't believe in God. Now that I'm older and I know more I know that I'm not but I don't have any religious affiliation.

Honestly, minus one friend who has a baby, none of my friends are out on their own (besides college). In the summer, you're living at home with your parents. I can make my own decisions, but I cannot support myself . I'd also argue that most 18 year olds do not know exactly who they are, which is why so many of them are still undecided on a college major.

I think Katie, Jenny, and others know exactly what they believe in. It doesn't take an age. Heck, a 50 year old might not know what they believe. It really takes alot of thought to make up your mind. I think both of those girls have done so, and they've done a good job. It doesn't mean I have to agree with them though.
