Can you use DVC points to book a regular hotel room at a non DVC resort such as Polynesian or Grand Floridian? I am looking at renting some points but I have 5 adult guests in my party. We don't want to buy points for a 2 bedroom vacation home so we are wondering what our other options are.

Thank you so much for your suggestions!

Yes, that's like an exchange into the Disney Collection. Points are VERY high to do that - there's charts on DVCmember.com, I believe.

ETA: I realized after posting -- I guess you're not a DVC member with your own points by your post. I don't think it would be cheaper to do what you're asking with a points rental than it would be to pay cash for those rooms. Or a break-even proposition at best, I think.

You can use points to stay at a non-DVC resort, but it's going to be WAY cheaper (and nicer, really) to stay at a 2-bd DVC villa. Or, for that matter, to pay cash.

For example, a week at Grand Floridian for one lagoon view room in value season is 423 points. A standard hotel room. No kitchen. Two beds.
Two hotel rooms would be 846.

That same week at, say, Bay Lake Tower in a 1-bedroom lake view (which sleeps 5 and has a kitchen and two bathrooms) would be 224 points, and a 2-bedroom (which would sleep all 5 far more comfortably, with three bathrooms) would be 297 points. If you're renting points for $10 a piece, that's a gigantic amount of money.

DVC points are only really a value when used at DVC resorts.

In additon to the points, DVC members must pay a $95 reservation fee for most non-DVC resort stays. That, plus the higher points for those resorts, will almost surely make it a better value for you to go through CRO.

Here's a link to the 2009 point chart for the non-DVC resorts in WDW, so you can see for yourself:
