Can a child go to both throughout the time on the ship? For instance, I have a eleven year old and an eight year old. My 11yo would like to go to Edge some, but also wants to spend some time with her brother.

For the most part, a child must choose one club to be in. Usually a child who would start in one club would be allowed to switch to the other, but that was the choice they had to stay with. On random cruises, 11/12 year olds were allowed to do back and forth between the two clubs.
Recently most people are reporting that kids must pick a club.

Last month we were on the Magic. As I noted, they were very strict about enforcing the age limits. My middle son turned 11 during the cruise and they made me sign a waiver to allow him into the Edge for the first 3 days until his actual birthday. They did give him a wristband for both clubs. I saw several kids with wristbands for both... assuming they must have been in that 11/12 range. May depend on the ship, but that was our experience.
Just back from a 5n at the Wonder. Edge required them to wear a green paper wristband. Lab/Club of course had the electronic wristbands. But we saw many tweens wearing both and hence allowed to either club.
Last August on the Dream, my DS11 then started at Lab and had the electronic wristband. He then wanted to try Edge and did so for the remainder of the trip. But we kept wearing the electronic one "in case he wanted to go back". He actually never did, but we turned it in the last night.
On neither of the trips we were told they had to choose...
I have this question this year too, so could he sign in to the lab get the mickey "lowjack" as he call it, then just cut it off and keep it in the safe and go in the edge, then when he wanted to go back to the lab just pull it out of the safe again?
Guess I have to put the small scissors back in our cruise bag so we can cut them off if they are starting to have the Edge kids wear something. Enjoyed the last two cruises without them!

It depends on the ship & the cruise whether they allow them to switch between the clubs or choose one and stick to it. The last option is what we have experienced consistently the past few years.
We were on a 3 night Dream cruise this past weekend (2/14-17). My 12 year old enjoyed both the Club/Lab (where his 9 and 6 year old sisters were) and the Edge....he was not made to choose, and in fact, they told him he was free to go to both places & encouraged him to explore both places.
