The OP said that she was not comfortable leaving her child while he was asleep - in that case then by all means, don't leave him. If you are comfortable to leave them for 5 minutes, then run and get your coffee.
I have left my ds8 (and my dd5) alone together in a hotel room for about 5 minutes while I ran down to the front desk (same level just down the hall). They were both ordered to stay in the room and not open the door for any reason. They were right where I left them when I returned.
I would not have a problem leaving ds8 while I went to get a drink but the laundry would take longer and I would not do that. I would not leave dd5 in the room alone period because she is more easily frightened than ds. But since we have 3 adults and 2 children this rarely comes into play.
When dd25 was growing up, I was a single mother. She was more mature than my little ones are now and she started babysitting for my cousin's children at their homes at age 12 - sometimes 4 kids at a time. She was left to get herself on/off to school at age 13.
