We are thinking of taking a lap top to OKW. If you use a dial-up service, where do you connect onto the telephone jack? And do you use a splitter for the phone line?
In a 1 BR the only choices are the LR area or the Bedroom.

At the BWV and the BCV, (where my most recent stays have been) I've just brought along another phone line and plugged my laptop line into the data port on the side of the telephone.

It's been a few years since I stayed at OKW, but I believe their phones are the same, (with the data port on the side.) One day, not realizing there was a data port connection on the phone, my DD just had unplugged the phone line from the phone in the living room and plugged it directly into her laptop... worked just fine.

My father-in-law brought his laptop with him when we invited the Grand parents on a trip. Although I'm not exactly sure where he plugged in I know he had no trouble with it. I'd bring a cheap splitter and an extra extension to make sure you have all you'll need.

Data ports are on the phones at OKW. In the livingroom and bedroom. They are or were in the process of putting in highspeed lines. I do not have any details about that service.

If using a dial up service make sure you are making a local call. The WDW area is kinda strange about what is long distance.
This will save a shocker at the end of your stay.

I was just at OKW last week and used my laptop. I just unplugged the phone cord from the phone and plugged it into my laptop. We were in the one-bedroom and used the phone lines from both phones, living room and bedroom.

I used an AOL free trial. When I registered, AOL gave me about a half-dozen Orlando numbers to choose from and some Kissimee numbers. The Orlando numbers are local even though you use the 407 area code.

OKW did charge 35 cents per call, local charges, for each time we connected. Just to make sure I was actually calling a local number, I called the front desk after our first connection and was told we had just the 35 cent charge.

PS Be sure to plug the phone back in if you connect the way I did! (Guess who missed a call?)

I've used my laptop at OKW & BWV. I have an extra phone line that I bring. Connect it from the laptop to the dataport on the side of the phone. Both that line and the phone's regular line underneath can be plugged in at the same time. You don't need a splitter.

The high speed dataports are installed in many of the OKW buildings but, as of this morning, they are not "live" connections yet.

As already suggested, there is a dataport on every villa phone (at all DVC and WDW resorts). The phone book will have a list of prefixes that are local calls (many in Orlando are local- none in Kississimmee are local). There are several in Reedy Creek also.

I have used netzero for dialup service at all WDW resorts and they have about 10 local numbers available. If you have any question about whether a number is local- check with the resort operator - local calls are .35 for DVC members at DVC resorts (.75 for non-members) and there is a huge surcharge for any long distance calls (they'll even warn you about that at check-in).

All you'll need is a phone patch cord to connect from the dataport to your laptop.

Enjoy!

I think the key to the 407 deal is if you have to dial "1" before 407 it is NOT a local call. If you do not have to dial "1" it is a local call. Weird.
