Ask a Yank (non political questions) thread.

Have you Brits had a genuine American hot dog before? Also for soccer/association football fans in the UK, do any of you watch or follow MLS or is it solely Premier League? Good luck to the UK teams in their quest to qualify for the WC26.

Defintely don't follow MLS, we follow all the football leagues in England, and check a few foreign leagues occasionally e..g La Liga, Bundesliga. I did check if there was an Orlando MLS game on our upcoming stay, just for the experience, but to be honest, as the only adult on the trip, I am too nervous to drive around Orlando late at night, or use Ubers.

Can I ask what British Disboarders think of the American pavilion in Epcot?
A little too patriotic for us. No offence meant. Only watched the film once, years ago, has it changed recently? . We prefer China and Canada films. Have great memories though of meeting Mr and Mrs Claus at the pavilion every year we visited for Christmas. Will be trying Regal Eagle on this year's trip 😋

You can contact the stadium directly for tips on transportation to help with your concerns. You could also get a taxi from your hotel/Disney Springs to the stadium directly and probably back to the hotel as well. It's only 20 minutes from WDW by road according to Google maps.

You tell me? This was one of the latest videos I found on YouTube.

Have you been in the USA on 4th of July before?

Yes, Miami in 2005. Watched the fireworks in the city and couldn't get a cab back to South Beach for hours 🤦‍♀️
If you do visit again during the 4th of July, I would recommend the WDW fireworks instead or the Macy's Fireworks in NYC. They are better with much better crowd control.

No to the genuine American hot dog. Can't say I like hot dogs in general really, although is that because I haven't tried a genuine American one? I tried a corn dog once, that was an interesting experience. Few years ago mind you so wouldn't mind giving it a go again!

It’s a good quality production, saw it last week. Some of the claims for US achievements are over the top and not accurate. Bell, Carnegie and Muir are all Scots.

If you British ever immigrated to the USA permanently, what questions would you have that are non political about your would be new home as a new resident?

I'd be really sad and ask all the practical questions about utility bills and the likes, how they work in the States to see if its different etc. Do you have anything like a council tax that homeowners pay to the local authorities for their properties that contribute towards local services?

Do you pay road tax on cars as well?

Ive also never been able to understand the whole sales tax thing and why its different in different States?

Did the link help?
Whoops sorry yes it did thank you, I got sidetracked reading it while at work!

I found the income tax bands interesting in the US and seemingly better than ours. With sales tax I think what frustrates me is the fact that its added on at point of sale whereas here, while VAT is a higher rate, it doesnt feel as noticeable because it's always included in the advertised pricing.

Also quite interesting that in the US property taxes are assessed periodically based on current property value. For us, council tax bands stay the same although the actual rates do increase every year like everything else.

I worked at a summer camp in my late teens/early 20's so experienced 4th July there! We did loads of fun stuff including a greased watermelon race (no one crossed the finish line with an intact watermelon 🤣 ). Otherwise I've not seen any fireworks or anything. Due to UK school holidays I don't think I ever will as they don't break up until the end of July.

I love a good corndog! I've tried ones in supermarkets in this country and they're pants! They need to be straight out the frier and scalding hot :thumbsup2

If I ever worked there I think I'd ask why you get so little annual leave!
Also having to do your own tax returns 😲 I don't think I could handle that!

I couldn’t cope with the sales tax situation if I lived in the US it would drive me mad. I like to know the TOTAL price of an item I’m buying as shown on the price tag, I don’t like having to guess what the actual price is until my purchase has been put through the till. I don’t really understand why supermarkets etc can’t just include the sales tax in the total price so you know what you’re paying? I understand different states might have different taxes etc but surely their pricing system can allow for that?

I didn't know either of these things! How much annual leave we talking? And people who aren't self employed have to do their own tax returns?

I'm so glad its not just me. I dont think it's as much of a problem now cash isn't as common a payment method, but years ago I remember getting so frustrated when going to pay with cash and trying to guess how much I'd need to get out to cover it - never got it right! 😂

It depends on where you live how transparent tax collection is and where it goes but speaking towards what homeowners pay and what they are paying for:

For my property taxes the state requires every January 1st the property be re-evaluated at fair market value. And then we get a pie chart that shows us the places the property tax goes

Specific to my house
Blue is the school district,
Red is the city
Orange is the county
Green is the county community college
Purple is the parks and rec department for my county
Light blue (the smallest) goes to the state itself

In the past the blue has been as high as 56% going towards the school district my house is located in.

Thank you that's really interesting!
