Well, I did it! And I survived!
The hardest part was getting up the courage to go down to the convention center to pick up my packet. It would have been SO easy to chicken out! I seriously considered it several times. Even after I picked it up I thought about just mailing the chip in and forgetting it - that I was insane for even thinking I could do it.
Getting in the actual line to pick up was also an exercise in courage. Everyone in the 1/2 or full line was young and thin. I felt like I should have been in the 1 mile survivor walk line or the 5K walk line. Then I had to stand in another line to get my Large shirt - which could EASILY fit a 350 poung 6'6" guy. I wanted to scream Can't Old, Fat women do this??? I'm not dead yet!! But I controlled myself!
So, I got up, got downtown to the designated meeting spot for a 7:15 meeting w/ the other 3 and didn't find them until 7:40. It was 35 out at that point and windchill was 30. Yes, I was COLD!! We stepped into line near the back of the pack after they had taken off and were on the way.
My calves & shins were tight for about the first 2 miles, then finally loosened up. Potty break at 5.5 miles and took the jacket off & tied it. I tried to jog when the gals I was with decided to, which was a bad mistake for my ankle. It was rebuilt 30 years ago (yes, I was 16) and impact really makes it hurt. So at about mile 6.5, I fell back as I couldn't keep up my stride length without my ankle feeling like a knife was in it. They actually only finished about 30 sec before me even with their wogging.
And, the odd flat footed stride left me with a nickle size blister on my sole behind my right big toe. Other than that and stiff hips, I feel pretty good.
About an hour post race w/o having eaten I got a bit pale & shaky, but I had some protein and laid down for a bit and am fine now. Blood sugar took a tumble. The only other odd thing was after about mile 6 I noticed my fingers/hands were puffy, but they de-inflated (is that a word) after I stopped.
I finished in 3:13:13 which if I calculate right is about 14:44/mile. Quite honestly I was just happy to make it the whole way. Especially considering I really just decided to do this about a month ago and never really trained fully.
All in all a good day, and I have my cheeseball lapel pin and tent sized shirt to prove it!
