Refillable mugs on E-bay

Hmmmm, you're right--I shouldn't have posted this--I was in a bad mood today and not feeling well and thought some "Disney time" would help me feel better. When I came across this auction it just ticked me off.

To the poster who asked/accused me about what I was looking for--I was looking for WDW COFFEE MUGS--which I collect.

This auction just seemed as wrong to me as the person that was trying to sell their CRT ADR. It is one thing to be dishonest and bring back mugs YOU bought on a previous trip, another to bring mugs someone GAVE you (friends, family members), but to be SELLING them on E-bay to someone that has no idea that they would be "breaking the rules" / "stealing" if they use them is just WRONG to me.

Believe me--I am not losing sleep over this. Didn't even "notify ebay", or e-mail the seller etc... Just a few moments of Righteous Indignation. Sympathy for an unsuspecting buyer who takes those mugs on a budget trip next year and finds out they changed the mugs and they are "caught" and have to pay for new ones.

I know that if I didn't know that you aren't supposed to use them more than once, bought them on ebay, took them, and got "caught" I would feel TERRIBLE that I had been "stealing" drinks.

Sorry to have involved you in my bad day! :guilty:

LOL so it's okay in a sense to take the mugs back or loan them to a friend, but not to unload them on ebay. Gotcha  Chances are the people that are buying the mugs on ebay know all about how they work from the various internet boards that discuss DisneyWorld. There certainly isn't much about them anywhere else and if you are reading about them online, you know the "rules" :flower:

What do you think ebay would do if you hit "notify" LOL. They would do nothing. It's not against their rules to sell a DisneyWorld mug :rotfl2:

I have personally sold my old mugs on ebay before BUT it was after they were changed and also sold them as a collectible. They were Brer Rabbit from Dixie Landings! I do feel bad for someone not knowing what they are getting into as in could be the wrong cup. I often browse disney stuff on ebay and wouldn't have known the difference early on or the rules.

When I purchased my very first mug from disney years ago, they were not sold as length of stay mugs but now it does state at every refill station right above the ice that is for your length of stay only!

My only issue with this whole cup thing is that disney thinks nothing of making you change hotels (thinks of it as a game) therefore I would NOT buy one at all star sports to two nights later change to Coronado and pay twice! But I hate it when I see tons and tons of other mugs being refilled.

I have never seen anyone say anything to a guest and plenty of times there has been CM around.

I decided I would ask the lady selling the mugs a question, here is her response,

"Hmm...we have always used them for return trips and was not aware of
any policy change. I was just at the Yacht Club in January '05 and the
Swan in August '05 and re-used mugs purchased on previous trips with no
problem at all. Sorry I really can't answer your question!"

something to entertain us all with tonight. If you go to disney all the time, you know! Why are people so dishonest all the time anymore! What has happened to our world?

My question was can you use these, do they change them aren't they purchased for length of stay only.

Maybe she didn't see a sign that says "for this stay only". It doesn't say it on the mug nor on the sign where you purchase the mugs, nor on the receipt and a CM does not tell you this when you purchase them. I know I have never seen that sign and I've been to Disney a few times over the years. The only reason I know of this "policy" is from reading the Dis Boards.

Folks who wonder why people make a big deal about this are perhaps missing the point. Disney is in business to make profit. As most businesses, Disney relies on the integrity and mature judgement of their customers. When that trust is abused, Disney often grins and bears it for a time, figuring that the cost of abuse is less than the cost of enforcement. Eventually, the cost of abuse becomes so significant that enforcement is necessary. And here's why people get upset: Enforcement usually results in an offering becoming less convenient and more costly for everyone, both those who were abusing the company's trust, and those who were behaving with integrity and applying mature judgement. It is very frustrating to those who live their lives with integrity to continually be subjected to ever-increasing inconvenience and cost due to the actions and behaviors of others.

I hope that helps clear things up a bit. It isn't some fascination with what others are doing. It isn't a blind love of the company. Rather, it is simply a desire to not be punished for responsible behavior.

On that note, Grand Californian Hotel at Disneyland Resort now offers its mug as "souvenier" only. No longer refillable. My guess is the change was due to abuse. :guilty:

It is an ethics issue and a terrible message that is sent to children who are old enough to be aware of what mommy and daddy are getting away with. No matter how you justify reusing the mugs, it's still stealing and it's still wrong. And, I highly doubt many people really think that a one time purchase of a mug entitles them to a lifetime of free beverages. That's just ignoring the obvious.

And who do we have to thank for that I may ask??? pirate: :sad2:

We buy new each time down but now that I have a HOME SSR is that not like length of stay since I'm always HOME just a thought. 12 bucks for unlimited drinks even a short weekend trip is worth it .I think some people just think the WORLD owes them and that transfer to Disney World.

This is my primary reason to "do the right thing". I want to lead my children by example. If it is okay to reuse mugs because Disney has lots of $$$, then what other rules/laws can we break as we see fit?

My DD11 is small for her age. We went mini-golfing last week, and the adult price started at age 11. The cashier didn't believe that I wanted to pay 2 adults & 1 kid (DS8) and mischarged me at first. I had to straighten her out. If I teach DD11 now to act like she is only 9 or 10 (boy could I save a bundle on my next WDW trip!), then is it okay for her to act 21 when she is only 19? Kids learn from their parents behavior.

Maybe honestly she doesnt know... I only know about this rule from DIS. Its not posted anywhere that I can remember.. How would someone who doesnt read DIS know of this rule?? :confused3 Personally I buy a new one each time, but its just because I like to use them here at home afterwards.. but if had never been here to this board, I never would have known about this.. How do we even know that this rule exists? Has a CM actually told anyone this before? Just curious..

I must admit that I get a huge kick out of all the self-righteous finger pointers here on the DIS.

Just remember, each time you point a finger at someone, three of them are pointing back at you.

:rotfl:

And with regard to this issue, those three fingers are typically pointing at someone who believes in fairness, truth, honesty, and integrity. :confused3

On this note,

I went through the bank's drive through window & cashed a check for $30.00,
I ALWAYS count my money before I drive off. After counting it, I realized she gave me $40.00. I told her I cashed a check for $30.00 & received $40.00. She was shocked! She said that I was the FIRST person that ever told of an error of receiving TOO much cash & she was so thankful.

My answer..... "I guess that's the difference of being a Christian & not" :goodvibes

'cept I'm no Christian and would do the exact same thing!

From what I can tell everyone who is going on and on about abusing these mugs (except maybe origional poster) seems to be middle aged or above. Maybe this is a generational thing.

I still would like to see where all these rules are posted. I have never seen them, nor been told of any of these rules while at Disney.

If Disney was losing any money with the refillable mug program (regardless of the circumstances), they wouldn't do it. Plus, I feel almost certain that they would rather have people return repeatedly and spend thousands of dollars each trip than worry than someone might be getting an "unauthorized" soda refill. That doesn't mean I think it's okay to sell them on ebay, it just means I think people should lighten up a little bit and worry about more important things.

:rotfl2:

You left out intrusive, presumptuous and righteous over much.

Now,where was the eBay thread again? I have a PayPal balance and I'm not afraid to use it.

I never understood why this is always such a hot topic. If Disney doesn't care, then MYOB, I'd say.

Agreed! ::yes::

I have a cousin who goes to Disney about once a year, she doesn't have a computer though (don't ask me why not... :confused3 ) and she had absolutely NO IDEA you couldn't use the mugs again on different trips. She did know you couldn't use a POP mug at POR, but not that they were only for length of stay. I happened to mention it one time for some reason and she was honestly clueless.

As someone else said if Disney was really concerened about it, they would make the policy alot clearer, but when you buy a mug "for length of stay only" has never been posted anywhere I've seen.
