Refillable Mug question

If it makes you feel any better last month when I stayed at the Poly, while I was eating at Captin Cook's one night these two guests sat down at the table next to me and they were using the Poly logo mugs.

I saw much the same last August at POFQ. I would say that only 50% of the people had YOAMD mugs and the rest had an assortment of resort specific mugs and many of them not from POFQ. Never once did I witness a CM stopping someone from filling anything.

This year I'm bringing my '07 YOAMD mug and if other people are using them then I will too.

Another nail in this coffin is that Disney no longer has resort-specific mugs, but rather a general mug that is designed and issued for a calendar year. I don't know what the re-use policy is within a given year, but suffice it to say that they can no longer be used after their "expiration date".

You would think. When we were at Pop last Sept. you saw so many different mugs. People seemed to fill up anything that would hold liquid. I know this is not the rule. I am just reporting what I saw.

I believe that one can never have too many mugs!

I agree - we have about the same number of mugs and more than 10 different designs.

I have to ask though, when did you get the DVC ones? I see it says spring on the side but can't make out a year. Those are adorable!!!

We got the Spring 2007 DVC mugs at SSR last May. :) They are alright but I still miss the resort specific and would have loved to see what they mug Imagineers could have come up with for SSR.

Talk them with you! Everyone uses old mug and we take are old mugs back every year. We go 1 to 3 times a year! Have a great trip!

This is just my view, but if you can afford the trip to WDW in the first place, surely you can afford a new cup. ;) Everytime I see this line of posting, I just can't help but laugh. It's a cup - buy one this trip and use it. Buy another the next time.

I miss the resort specific ones as well. When they started switching to the YOAMD mugs last spring I bought some resort specific ones from resorts I've never stayed at but thought I might in the future just to have them in my collection.

I'm not sure that SSR would ever have gotten its own anyway - we have one from there with DVC Summer 2006 that was also available at OKW, VB, and HH (the non-attached DVC's). I agree it would have been nice to see what they would have come up with though! :goodvibes

I'm not the OP but for me it's not about the $$$ It's about the principle of the thing. They sell you a product and tell you it's good forever then it darn well better be good forever. And at that time it was a hefty amount to pay for a stupid plastic cup. And apparently Disney does honor those older glasses.

OP If your mug does not have the standard warning in small print under the handle stating that it's only good for length of stay then you've got one of the unlimited use mugs. I'd take it and use it.

We have stayed at the ASMo twice now. In 2006 and 2007. We bought new mugs for both our trips.....but like everyone is saying. I thinkit is very hard for Disney to enforce this rule. We also saw about half of the people there using "incorrect mugs" and no one said anything to them. With the YOMD mugs looking the same for 2008 as they did when we bought them last year (minus the year) it would be even harder for someone to know that it was the "wrong" mug!

Hah, hah, hah. :lmao: Every single mug we have doesn't have the writing on the handle, but there was a sign where we bought it saying it was only good for that resort during that trip. That has always been Disney's policy. It just might not be the policy of the CM working the register at the resort. Why bother getting the guests mad at the CM for trying to enforce a policy that Disney doesn't even choose to enforce.

Since 1997 for us. And we don't reuse them. Heck, we don't even use them at home.

Well, i have seen that policy, but honestly, my friends did re-use their's and no one noticed

Sorry double post.
Please see post below.
TIA

i'm with you

i asked a mug question BUT it was "is it worth the savings if you drink 2 drinks a day for 7 days?"

everyone said yes, it was worth it

i'll be leaving them at home for the next trip even if they're in pristine condition and the same design

I agree.
I have serched the internet many times over looking for PROOF that Disney did in fact have a lifetime
refillable mug at one time . I did not find any articles to back up the claims of a lifetime refillable mug.
I did find a photoshop photo of this PRETEND one:

Here are some articles I did find that were written in 2002 and back up the claim that the Disney resort refillable mugs were never lifetime refillable mugs.

From this Mouseplanet.com websiteJune,2002:

http://www.mouseplanet.com/mike/ref...icy_changes.htm

In an effort to rein in costs and increase income, the Walt Disney World Resort hotels are making some drastic changes to the extremely popular refillable mug program that may affect many repeat visitors to the resort.

[If you are unfamiliar with the program, you can read about it in MousePlanet's WDW Resorts from A to Z page under "Refillable Mugs."]

According to an article in the Orlando Sentinel entitled "32 ounces of soda not enough? Disney tries out self-serve refills," Walt Disney World is making large 32-ounce soft drink mugs available for free self-serve refills in Typhoon Lagoon. That's the good news. The bad news is that you can only refill your mug on the day of purchase. If you return to Typhoon Lagoon the next day, you can no longer refill your mug for free.

Disney has added a new UPC bar coding system to the self-serve refill stations that, for the first time, controls a previously unenforced policy. Although the refillable mug program has always been advertised as available during an actual length of stay that allows guests to refill their mugs during their trip, in reality, guests often brought their mugs back on subsequent trips to refill them free of charge. With the UPC code tied to a guest's hotel reservation, this new system closes this loophole altogether. That is, once your stay has ended, your mug is no longer refillable. Those mugs you bought on previous visits won't work next time you vacation at WDW.
Another loophole that may close with this new system is that you might not be able to use your mug at any other resort except at the one you are staying. For example, if you stay at one of the resorts for a few days and purchase a mug there, and then you move over to another resort for the balance of your vacation, the mug might not be refillable at the second resort. How will this new system be enforced? Once the UPC code system is fully activated, they can devise a system by which the fountains work only if an "active" UPC code is on the mug.

WDW visitors are already complaining that the new system is yet another line to stand in and just "more time-consuming nonsense cutting into [one's] vacation time."

Did you recently visit WDW and see this change in practice? If you have any first-hand knowledge or experience, please email me or Brian Bennett at brian@mouseplanet.com to provide us with more details.

Here is another article written in June 2002:

Disney Mug Holders, Beware

"The new system of computerized monitoring of fountain refills being experimented with at Typhoon Lagoon could tighten a rather loose policy at Disney's resorts. They sell 16-ounce souvenir mugs for $9.99.

Guests may refill them at resort snack bars unlimited times with soda, coffee or tea for the length of their stay. Cashiers sell the mugs and then are supposed to keep a watchful eye as guests get their own refills.

But some Disney World employees and regular guests say they take the mugs on repeat visits to the snack bars and fill up -- basically a lifetime of free drinks for one purchase. They are occasionally offered on eBay and at garage sales, testimony to their timeless value.

Cashiers say the mugs' designs aren't changed enough for them to spot old ones. But the new system being tried at Typhoon Lagoon employs a bar code that's read electronically at the drink dispenser and recognizes old mugs." [Orlando Sentinel, via Boing Boing]

Refillable Mug Policy Tightening?
According to the Orlando Sentinel, Disney is experimenting with a new computerized barcode system to be used in tandem with it's refillable mug program offered at their resorts. The program allows guests to buy a mug for each person in their party which then can be used for unlimited drink refills during their stay. The policy change could come as a result of Guests taking the mugs on repeat visits to Disney World to fill up on what becomes basically a lifetime of free drinks for one purchase.

Just my 2 cents.
