Asking an honest question, please no flames.

We are doing a 10 day split stay por/bc. Is there anyway to use the mugs for both parts of the stay (maybe a trade in)? We are a family of 5 and I really can't see buying 10 mugs, ugh!! I know what the policy is, but this really all would be the same stay. Any thoughts?

Sorry, no such thing as a 'trade in', and mugs are only supposed to be used at the resort purchased for the current stay.

Granted, you are 'staying' all at once, but the definition of a 'stay' is while you're checked in to a particular resort. Even though you're not leaving Disney, you have two 'stays' if you're at two resorts.

Snowmouse,
Based on the tone of your original post, you already know that this is a hot issue here on the DIS. I also am assuming that you know and understand the issues that make it a hot topic. So I wonder why you asked the questons when you clearly know the answers.
I have never entered the refillable mug debate before, and will probably be sorry I did this time. That said I think you know the answer to your questions. One resort - One mug, Two resorts - Two mugs. There are no trade ins, and on a split stay you would be expected to buy a mug for the "Length of Stay" at EACH resort. Those are the rules. If 10 mugs total is too many - that will be your decision.
You will find folks here that support you in re-using a mug at the 2nd resort, and those that don't. It is your decision, knowing the rules and their intent, to make your own choice.

Buy 2 mugs at each resort and share. It doesn't say anywhere that the mug is "per person".

Just curious msmayor - since I didn't stay at Contemporary Resort but got refillable mugs at the Food and Fun Center to use each time we dined at Contemporary Resort during our stay (one night at Concourse Steakhouse, one night at Chef Mickey), or got to MK early for park entry (3 mornings) - I should have bought a new mug? I would think if you were using 10 consecutive days then that constitutes a stay? :confused3

I am not following you on this one at all. Where did you stay, and why did you buy CR mugs if you did not stay there and what does a CR mug have to do with going to the MK early and CR if you did not stay there.

Snowmouse,

I don't think there is anything wrong with your post. Its a legitimate question. Split stays do not work well for mugs. I think a trade in would be a good idea, but Disney has yet to make such a policy, so your stuck with buying mugs at each resort. DH and I always split stays so we just don't get the mugs. Its just not worth it for the short stays. We don't really drink that much at the resort anyway. We like to eat in the parks and at the other resorts. I always buy a couple of bottles of water and keep them in the fridge.

Keep your receipts for the first mug purchase and take it with you and ask at the second resort. Abide by what they say.

Otherwise, 2 mugs at the first and 3 at the second wouldn't be a bad idea either.

We stayed at All-Star Music and bought two mugs to ASMu and two mugs to Contemporary. We took the transportation to the park at 8 and usually had 45 minutes until the park opened. For a souvenier we got the two mugs at Contemporary and used them during our stay when we would be going to the Contemporary for dinner. We would go to the Contemporary and get a refill then walk around in the gift shops till our reservation was ready. We also used them for refills while waiting for park to open in morning or for the bus to come back at night. When we waited for an hour for a bus to go back to the ASMu after Wishes we were glad to have them (DW waited in line and I walked over to CR for refills). Didn't know it was against the rules for that.

Here's an easy solution.

don't bother getting mugs at the BC.
it's a long walk to beaches and cream for a soda if you are on the opposite side of the resort

We always split stay so sometimes our bought mug does not even get a single use. That being said we just bring it back for the next trip. If I am staying 2 days at the CR and move to WL I will just move the mug over. Fair is fair with the price of the mug being so high.

I know its nice for everyone to have there own mug, but what we do is we share between two mugs, and since your going to two resorts that might work better for you. And plus you get refills so use them up!

Thank you for the constructive thoughts and suggestions. I really didn't want any debate started, but I do think that I have a legitimate point in the consideration of an alternative to 'policy'. I think I will take my receipt and ask. Otherwise, I guess we will share, but teens can drink a LOT of pop!! It is not my intention to break the rules, or cause anyone to read anything into my question anything other than what I was asking.

Let's all take a deep breath.....and relax. I'm going to Disney in FOUR days :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc

Actually, it sounds like what you did is absolutely correct.

IMO, what the original poster was hoping was that she could either (a) use the mugs from resort #1 at resort #2 or (b) trade in resort #1 mugs for new ones at resort #2, both of which are not options.

As far as I'm concerned, there's nothing wrong with buying a refillable mug from a specific resort and using it at that resort while you are staying there or, after you've moved to another resort during a consecutive stay.

Just keep in mind if they refuse to let you use the mugs at the second resort it isn't Disney problem that you split your stay.

The mug program is a great value and worth the money. You have received some great suggestions.

I have absolutely no understanding of why the mug issue is such a big deal to so many people. Please help me understand.

We always split stays and don't find buying the mugs a good value anymore because we only stay a few nights at each resort.

That said, the first time we split a stay, when I purchased a mug at GF (our resort # 1) I asked the CM if it was okay to use them at our second resort since we were transferring over in a few days. The CM said it would be fine. Then, when we transferred over to the WL concierge a couple days later, I asked again at check-in if we could use our GF mugs that'd we'd just bought a few days earlier, and they said yes. I think I only refilled the mug once or twice tops while at the pool, since we had drinks in concierge anyway, but I guess technically the CMs were allowing me to do something that is against policy--I had no idea!

Anyway, nowadays since I'm a DIS veteran and only spend a few days at each resort anyway, I usually just forgo the mugs. But since you have such a large family and are only switching once, you could probably ask at the second resort and see if they allow you to re-use them. If not, it's probably not worth it to buy the second set--or at least whole new mugs for everyone in your family. The mugs are cute in any case as souvenirs...believe me, we have many mugs here from our previous trips! :wave2: :sunny:

Since you know the rules/policy... I say just buy 2 at POR and 2 at BC... Share.. share...share!! :) You can refill them as many Xs as you want. Or... maybe... you can buy 4 at POR and then at BC you can buy just 1. Then keep refilling your BC and keep pouring it into POR mugs. What's the difference? You bought the mugs... and it's refillable as many Xs you want to whoever wants to drink it. The beverages came from the BC mug..... so.. it's not really stealing... is it?
