Just had a nice talk with my DVC guide. In feb., we met another family from NY who were interested in adding on another week at Vistana. We met a couple more times during the week, and we convinced them to buy WLV. We had a message on our answering machine at the Boardwalk from our guide thanking us for the referral. When we returned home, we called our guide several times, leaving messages on his machine asking if we get some sort of referral bonus? Well, after talking to him a couple of minutes ago, our guide told us the family we referred to them, had looked into the DVC in 1994. Since they were in DVC's computer, we didn't qualify. I told my guide, that it was 7 years ago, and they didn't buy them, obviously, we were the difference. All I could get was , Sorry! I emailed the story to member services, awaiting their reply.
Has this happened to anyone else?

It sort of happened to me but the other way around (sorta, kinda).
I was the refer"ee". I originally looked at DVC in 92 and for many reasons (financial being primary one), I opted not too buy.

A friend of mine eventually "sold me" and I joined in May of 2000. When I was signing papers I asked if my friend would get a referal bonus and I was told, no, as I had looked at DVC in 92, he wouldn't qualify.

I told my guide that if he didn't get a referal, the deal was off. Less than two minutes later, my guide sprinkled pixey dust into the deal, my friend got $200 in Disney Dollars, and I joined DVC.

Somethings "are" negotiable in life ;)

Thanks for the response. You would think that at their closing, the guide would have mentioned the non referral for the member, when they brought up our name.

This happened to us to.... when we first looked into the DVC a few years ago, I mentioned the name of a women I worked with... When we bought last year I specifically gave the name of current owner/friends....well the first one from years ago got the referral.

At first I was a little miffed, but then just decided to let the first group think of it as a little pixie dust sprinkling on them from an long lost friend.

I agree though, they should give the "award" to the most current name on the list....

But live and learn, maybe someone will learn from our mistakes by reading here.

Since I live in CT. It is illegal for DVC to "reward" me with any "sales" I make for them.
Gotta love it.

Just got a call from our guide (after an email to DVC management asking what's up). We got the referral. I guess my creative writing courses in college worked.

We didnt even know they had a referral program when we referred 2 people, who bought, over the past several years. We found out about the program when the brother of the 3rd family we referred joined and his family member got the incentive. I did not spend a lot of time trying to analyze why we had got nothing but instead took the philosophy that I do not get paid to sell ownerships so why bother. All those people who joined fell in love with DVC while vacationing with us on my points. We were bringing them with us regardless of their ultimate interest in ownership. DVC should appreciate the enthusiasm of its members a little more. It is probably cheaper in the long run to throw those a bone who have referred someone then find reasons why not to. In our case we have gotten out of the referral business. Instead we enjoy the the ownership for what we originally bought it for, a pre-paid vacation at a really great place!!!!!

Talked one of the ladies that works with my mom into going with DVC after some indecision. I didn't get the referral as they talked with DVC years ago and they told me it was only for the original referral.

I shrugged my shoulders and told myself I'm glad I did it anyway so someone else can enjoy a piece of the magic.

Of course, right now I am walking talking DVC salesperson here in Wisconsin, so I hope I might have more referrals down the road. :)

As I have posted previously, we have provided DVC with several names, but they never heard from them and went on and bought Marriott, Vistana, etc. Two months ago I faxed and called a "guide" I met on a cruise last Oct.and gave him the name of a very interested couple. As of yesterday they have yet to hear from him or anyone else. It makes me feel foolish to discuss DVC with these people, when DVC will not do a follow up.

According to our Guide it is illegal here in Indiana as well. Go figure.

WE have refered 3 couples who have purchased, and we get nothing because we live in Minnesota where it is also illegal. I think there are actually only a few states that allow a payback. I still like sharing the magic any way!

Compensation for a referral is illegal in PA too. The member I named when I joined did receive a nice letter from Disney thanking him for the referral and explaining no compensation was available in PA.

I originally was started on DVC by one friend 7 or 8 years ago. I never purchased until Oct 2000. In the interim betwen my first contact and purchase another friend was also a great help to me. I asked to have the referral reward split between the two friends. I did not tell them who the initial referral came from, but my Disney Rep was able to determine this so they obviously keep a good database on potential buyers. I was told that the original person to refer me was the only one Disney would agree to give the referral reward to, and this is the way it went.
