Referral/Dream It Forward-disappointing

I must apologize first, as I realize I'm complaining about a freebie. But I'm honestly just disappointed in the referral program and my experience on a call with the DVC member services just now. Please don't flame me, I'm just upset. I know I'm not entitled to a darn thing. But to say you get a reward and then not really have most of the options available to you is disappointing.

Our friends just purchased 175 points off our referral, so we got an email to check out the options for special experiences and call to book. There are 11 options on the list. 3 are seasonal. 1 is for an age group older than my 6 year old (the tour). 2 we have previously done (behind the seeds and pirates fireworks cruise, though I actually chose that to do again for our option). Of the 5 remaining, only 3 are for up to a party of 4. The others only allow 2 guests. We are a party of 3 (me, my husband, my 6 year old).

I asked about what to do about my 6 year old on the ones that are for up to two people, and was told I can purchase one of the adult tickets at full price and get one adult and child free. The adult ticket is more expensive, and they won't let me purchase the child separately. Which means spending money for something that's supposed to be a freebie.

They also said I can't use it for our February trip since apparently this is a 2018 reward (even though they purchased in the 2017 use year).

So I said, ok, let's do the Ice Cream Social. That's for up to 4 guests and is something I think my son would enjoy. I was then told that they can't book that for us because since it's under a refurb they don't have any dates available. I was told that doing the elephant tour was really our option. I decided to call back later in hopes that the social opens up before our later trip, because we're not overly interested in the elephants.

I guess I'm just frustrated because either we purchase an adult ticket to be able to use one of these rewards (money we wouldn't be spending otherwise because we wouldn't be doing one of these experiences) or choose the one remaining option for us that we're not interested in doing.

That is disappointing.

We have done the elephant tour, and it was ok, but I don’t know that we’d do it again. You get to see some backstage areas. And you get a good, but not very close, view of the elephants. It lasts about an hour. We have also done the Wild Africa Trek, so my expectations may have been too high.

As with many things DVC/Disney, they make it look better than it is. IMO most extras are used to help sell DVC to new prospects and are not intended to be as wonderful as advertised. We were told that Texas can participate it this program where in the past programs we could not. According to the State, nothing has changed and we are still restricted. I tried to contact Disney about the program, spoke to a few people, they read the info that they have, it says that Texas is included, when pressed, they don't know who to talk to for additional info. One reply was that they think that some lawyer made the rules.

Understandable. Really, DVC is the one that needs to hear this. You could essentially copy what you wrote in an email to them. This referral program shouldn't be that hard to use and isn't good at all as the difficulty of it apparently leaves a bad taste in ones mouth for doing so.

I will write them an email after a couple of days when I've cooled off a bit - I'm afraid of just angrily sending off an email. I want it to be heard (if possible).

Ugh. :( That's not good - they should at least be able to give you a clear answer.

Hmmm. I'm in Georgia, where we used to be eligible, but now we're not on the list. I didn't think anything has changed.

Wow. That's rotten.

I think what you wrote is just fine, FYI. You could send it to them as is in my opinion.

Not being able to buy a single child ticket is just plain ridiculous! That would aggravate me as well.

Send it to ken.potrock so he knows that his process is broken. Often when sending to normal channels, the executives say that they never hear about the issues.

Just curious, are these referral reward options (including restrictions/limitations) disclosed upfront? As in whether I can see what they are on a website or a brochure before I refer someone?

I think that your email was fine. It didn't come off as whiney or angry. Just frustrated. Which is understandable.
