Please forgive my ignorance. LOL.

Not sure I have the name right. Do you always need them when towing?

We had them in our GMC Yukon 1500, but now we have a GMC Sierra 2500. Do we need to have them installed? We tow a 25 ft travel trailer (Outback 25 RSS).

Yes, on a trailer that size, you need electric brakes. If your Tow Vehicle came with the tow package, the wiring should be there but you may need a relay or two. Check the owner's manual or dealership.

You will also need a brake controller. I would recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy. It is a little more expensive than most but it does a great job. I installed mine in about 1/2 hour and you can get cables that plug into a connector under the dash of the truck and into the brake controller making installation just plug and play Your RV dealer can also help you out with this.

Good Luck and happy camping,
Al

I second the recommendation for the Prodigy. Easy to install. My Ford came with a pigtail that matched up easily to the Prodigy, and it took me all of about 10 minutes to adjust the controller for our camper. This is one of the best, if not the best, controllers on the market.

i third the prodigy, it is money well spent, its plug and play on the truck - at least it was for mine. (2002 GMC 2500 HD)

My dh is a master tech and he says that it depends on the weight of what you are towing, length is not the issue. If your trailer weighs more than 3000 lbs then you need an electric brake. We use a voyager for our 30 ft trailer that weighs 6800 lbs.

Their trailer is definitly over 3000 lbs. I looked at them before buying my TrailManor.

We use the Prodigy also and we tow a 36' fifth wheel. It has been the best controller we have ever had.

We just bought a new RV and had electric brakes installed. Anything over 2,000 lbs needs electric brakes. Ours was a little less than that, but because we drive through the mountains it was recommended that we get electric brakes. Our RV didn't come with them, but we had them installed.

The RV dealer installed them ... glad we spent the extra $$ to get them!

Thanks guys. The truck came with a tow package. DH went out last night and bought the Tekonsha and is going to install it himself. I'll point him in your directions if he has any questions. :teeth: ::yes::
