Redbox no Blindside!

the reasoning is that if you can rent it for $1, why would you BUY the video ata all? Some moviemakers HAVE gone to court over this and i guess this agreement came out of it.

and WHY on EARTH would anyone think the government helps consumers???? I'd like to see your supporting evidence on THAT one.

Well, Hastings (where I work my second part time job) has it and we put our local Blockbuster out of business. I'm sorry, but Blockbuster always seemed to have sneaky deals going on and getting sued. Hastings rents new releases for 3.99 and if you bring the movie back the next day you get a 2.00 credit. If you're smart you can continue this cycle on and on..rent, use 2.00 credit so only pay 2.00, bring back, get credit, rent, etc. So, if you have a Hastings, give them a try :) ( I do notice now, that some of our rental titles are specifically rentals and have 'rental' stamped on them. We are also now having to to return some product instead of converting to sale)

This is outrageous I thought the government is suppose to help the consumer and not make us pay higher prices for the same item.

Now we want the government getting into the movie and video industry? Can't wait to see the prices then!

The studios have agreements with different video companies and it's strictly a business decision - just as McDonalds can decide to sell coke or pepsi - it's not a conspiracy and we don't need any more government buyouts of private companies!

The reason I said that about the government is because I heard a judge ruled they have to wait 28 days and it seems like price fixing to me.

I would think the Judge would want the consumer to get the best deal not worst.

I don't know all the details about the ruling it just seems unfair for the consumer.

As for Family Video their new releases are almost $4 to rent went at red box you can rent 4 movies for at $1 each for the same price.
We pay for the half price membership which is very worth it for us because we all rent a lot. I love to browse through the $1.00 and 2 for $1.00 movies too and they constantly throw those in for free. Plus DS gets games.

It always seems like Redbox is out of things. :confused3

I imagine that the judge is just upholding contractual agreements. It isn't price fixing if a company is supposed to get first dibs on a product.

Exactly. It's really no different than the fact that the person sitting next to you on an airplace may have paid half what you paid for the same ticket. Perhaps they found a deal or bought well in advance and you didn't. It's not unfair. It's capitalism. How about one store that will have an item on sale starting Saturday but you want it on Thursday. You can choose to pay the full price or wait two days for the sale. No one says you're entitled to the absolute cheapest price on the exact day you want the item (or DVD). You can either pay a higher price or wait. That's how things work.

I'm not surprised that Redbox has limitations on renting DVDs. The one at our grocery store rarely has the most recent titles. I just keep checking back to see when they're available. I assumed it was because they are a budget rental box. They charge less for rentals, thus paying the production company less. It makes sense that the producers would rather the higher-priced rental places get it first.
