Red rings of death!!!!

We just went through this. Went on line, put the serial number in, and it came back that we were eligible for free repair - did not need the receipt at any point. Caveat, my son registered the system when he got it so that may be how you can avoid needing a receipt?

From there, Microsoft sent specific instructions via e-mail for shipping it back including pre-paid shipping label and some other details. Repaired machine was back about 2 weeks after the initial shipment.

About 2 years ago, I bought a used XBOX 360 off of Craigs List. A few months or so later, the red rings of death. My (now) DH packed it up and sent it off to Microsoft and we got a replacement. No receipt, obviously. But got a replacement with no problems at all. And received it pretty quickly.

Thanks again to all for your advice, I am just disgusted that I never thought to look for a serial number when we bought it and now I pay the price. I could of had the chance to challeng them right then and give them a chance to defend themselves. Microsoft will do nothing without a serial number. Back plate and inside USB port are clean, no sign that an attempt was made to remove the numbers, could be a new face plate. I can only figure this thing was stolen and wants to make sure no bopdy ever tracks him down. I guess I have myself a 200.00 paper weight. Thanks

these can be fixed!

We had the RROD and then banned and Dh fixed both.

Go to the Microsoft website. Contact them. They will tell you whats best. My son bought his off a friend - got the "ring of death", he didn't do anything for about 6 months, contacted Microsoft & they sent him a label for the box, he didn't even have the original box, he sent it in a shoebox. He mailed it in & one was sent back in about 2 weeks. They tell you 4-6 weeks I believe.

Give it a try, it can't hurt.

We recently encountered the red rings also... problem is i never registered the console. Am I stuck? We have original box etc. I may even still have receipt.

We didn't register DS's either and he got the RROD. We called and they emailed me a shipping label. Never cost us anything.

I bought our first one off of ebay too, then bought an extended warranty through square trade.

1 - square trade cancelled the warranty and gave me the $$ back b/c it had been refurbished with a fan to fix the overheating problem

2 - I called to register it for xbox online and gave them the serial number, Microsoft gave me all kinds of problems b/c it had already been registered by the original owner and I didn't know their name/address/info, etc.

3 - we got the RROD in November, 2009 - called Microsoft and guess what? The machine was purchased by the original owner in September of 2006 -- so the 3 year warranty was up!! :headache:

They wanted $100 to fix it, I messed around with craigslist trying to set up something local to get someone to fix it - forget it, way too much hassle!

The arcade systems are $200 all day long, and I bought when I could get $40 back from walmart.com from bing.

So for $160 we got a new arcarde system which came with another controller ($40 value right there), no loud fan, and just took the hard drive from the old machine and put it into the new one. Much better solution for us, especially right before Christmas (of course I had bought a ton of xbox 360 games already for the boys for gifts).

We gave the old machine to my DS14's friend who couldn't afford to buy a new machine, he registered it in his name and sent it in to Microsoft with the $100 to fix it. He got it back in 2 weeks and is as happy as a clam with it! :goodvibes

I was wondering if anyone knows of reasons the serial numbers would be removed unless you are selling stolen or refurbished merchandise.

Or something like that -- since the serial number (which is a barcoded label which can be seen through the original retail box) is no longer on the console, don't get your hopes up for Microsoft to come to the rescue.

Lesson: If a deal on eBay sounds "too good to be true" -- chances are, it is just that...
