What is this whole REd Hat Society thing. I see all kinds of trinkets and other mdse in stores but I do not know what it is about. My girlfriend told me it has to do with being over 50. How long has it been around and how did it start?

I have no idea, but my mom just started one. Younger people can go, but I think they have to wear pink hats. Once you are 50 or older you wear the red hats. Sorry, my mom kept talking, btu to be honest, I stopped listening.

I can ask her more questions if you are interested though.

it goes w/a story about a womaen who reached 50 and wore a purple dresses & red hat - because she knew who she was and didn't care if they didn't match - she was an individual

A woman I work with has a story about this posted in her cubicle.
The red hat society is based on an essay. It is something to the effect of.. "when I get older I'll wear a red hat and a purple coat, and I will have tea with my girlfriends..."
I cannot remember the whole story, I'll have to read it again when I get back to work from my vacation.

Red hats and purple shirts. I just saw a group of ladies from this society at a resturant near my office last week.

Binny, I used to drink at a bar called the Red Hat when I was in college.

Okay I looked it up . Thanks. I will be sure NOT to buy a red hat. By the way a red hat and a purple dress DO go together. They are adjacent on the color wheel.

When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me,
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired And gobble
up samples in shops and press alarm bells And run my stick
along the public railings And make up for the sobriety of
my youth.

I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick the flowers in other people's gardens
And learn to spit. You can wear terrible shirts and
grow more fat And eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and a pickle for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and
beermats and things in boxes.

But now we must have clothes that keep us dry And pay our
rent and not swear in the street. And set a good example
for the children. We will have friends to dinner and read
the papers. But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old and start to wear purple.

That's the poem! Red Hat Society is, as my mom says, a fun-loving sorority of 50+ women. She says she isn't quite ready to join, but that she also can't wait to join, either. Younger people can join RHS Chapters as Pink Hats. The groups get together to do fun things like go to teahouses, restaurants, and other outings to celebrate being themselves and have some fun.

Seems like a great thing to me... I love to see people having fun!

Thanks for the chuckle. :D

I saw a few red hat ladies the other week getting ready for something.

Freaked me out.

My friend started one and I joined at the beginning. We'll both be 50 next year and it sounded like fun. However, my friends 80 year old mother and HER very religious church-lady friends have all joined. My friend won't say "no" to her mother. So, the group pretty much holds luncheons and does arts & crafts type things. Can you say "boring?"

If they did fun things--like hitting the casinos, or dancing, or exercising, or shopping trips, or...oh I don't know...things that require more activity, and maybe a little wine on occasion, I might be more inclined to stay with the group.

As it is, I'm not quite ready for the senior center and I'm not interested enough in the group to start my own chapter.

I qualify but haven't joined yet. I'll keep wearing my green bucket hat. Maybe I should form a bucket hat society. :hyper:

When I am an old woman, I shall wear Mickey Ears
And force my family to wear matching shirts at the parks.
And I shall spend my pension on Mickey ice cream bars and sun screen
And more DVC points, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when watching the parades
And gobble up snacks at the Food and Wine Festival in October
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my Mickey poncho in the rain
And take pictures of the flowers in the Flower and Garden Festival
And sing the entire Mouseketeer song (loudly) while waiting in lines.

You can be the official second member! :earsgirl:

I just noticed that Byer's Choice Dolls came out with a Red Hat version. They go to our church, I was gonna ask them what it was about.

I think it's some kind of gang, like the bloods (RED!) or something.

It's a rough crowd.

I saw a group of ladies in red hats at Hershey Park 8/18, but they were wearing white shirts with a picture of the red hat on it.
