I was just thinking about how negative the boards seem to be these days, use to be I would recommend the baords to my co-workers, freinds and their KIDS, not sure if i would anymore, now first I feel like I need to put in the disclaimer that I believe it is ok to post negative experiences more then ok, it is much needed if this forum is going to deceminate information so people can get an idea what might be the right way to tour or which resorts or restaurants to choose etc. Been on these boards a long time, we own DVC been to the parks 20 + times, from paper ticket days to now. We are leaving for the parks in 44 days so I will get a feel for the new system and what it does for our taouring style. We are bringing our DD best friend with us that has never been and I recommender and both her and our daughter to these boards and I am starting to feel a little embarresed that I did. I understand the negative feelings to the change to FP even I as an obsesive planer is not really enjoying trying to pick FPs 2 months out, but the level of personal attacks of peoples character etc is getting bad. I had one co-worker ask me if he had the right web address as he found the place as negative as some of the rivalry sports sights he belongs to pitting Boston VS New York teams.

Would you recomend this sight to your 10 year old? 6-8 years ago there use to be a fare number of kids on here learning about there upcoming trip.
How about your mother, or somebody you look up to?

I am not saying "Why can't we all just get along" that would be stupid, but can we bring a level of civility back? As we talk and debate and explain our experiences and dislikes about
the "Happiest place on earth"?

Just saying

OK let me put on my asbestos underwear

AND FLAMES ON
;)

Yes I would recommend this site to adults.

My 10 year old wouldn't be on the internet, unsupervised. :/

I dunno, its a massive change. I dont think its realistic to think any Disney board is going to be all happy these days. In fact most of them are a mix.

I usually recommend the Unofficial Guide to first-timers. I dont think there is any forum I would rec. as soon as they google one question the disboards will probably pop up anyway :)

I would recommend the dis but with some advice for the person. I would tell them what boards to look at such as the budget board, trip report board and others that would really help them plan. I would stay away from new and rumors that pretty opinionated. The resorts Baird would be good also looking at the specific resort threads that give good and bad experiences at that resort. Being told the pros and cons is better than being told the pros and then when they go find all the cons because the came into expecting more. I think it's good to see multiple sides not just the positive, sometimes you need those negative experiences to help you pick the best resort, ticket, park, etc. that fits you.

I agree. The PP isn't saying, "Don't say anything bad." They are simply saying the character attacks have gotten bad. If you don't agree with something it doesn't mean the poster is an evil minion, it is simply the difference of opinion. No need to bash people for not feeling the same.

I would still recommend it but with some warning on what to look for :)

I don't usually recommend these boards for planning. Too much information to sift through.

These boards are good for specific questions because there are some very helpful, very knowledgeable folks here. I've had some very helpful answers to my questions about the best way to get from Epcot to DHS, Disney cakes, best way to get from Yacht Club to MK, etc. As a general planning tool I'd recommend easywdw.com as the first stop and allears.net as the second. This is a good place to keep your fingers on the pulse of what's going on (for example, you might find a post or two here about FP+) but as someone else mentioned there's probably too much info for a general planning website. And I like to know things that folks are unhappy about. It gives me something to think about. Agree that personal attacks have gotten a bit out of hand and are unnecessary.

Its easy to get overwhelmed with boards, but if you have specific questions or want to use someones else trip as a jumping off point, they are great!

I would recommend the DIS, but I would suggest they stay away from the forums. If I knew nothing about Disney and these boards were my first stop for information, I would immediately start looking for another place to vacation. There are many knowledgeable, well-mannered, posters on this site, but unfortunately, they are quickly becoming outnumbered.

I agree.

There is a fine line between discussing the facts of the new system and how it can be improved, vs. just stating personal opinions of how someone feels about the system. The first allows for constructive discussion of the system and it's merits and flaws, while the second sometimes creates passionate dissension between posters that can lead to personal attacks or implications of intent.

For now both are allowed, so it's kind of: "go with the flow and pick your threads wisely"...:santa:

Ten year olds shouldn't be on the internet unsupervised, so no, I wouldn't recommend this site to a 10 year old. :confused3

I do agree with that.

I don't recommend this board to people... If they're the sort of person who'd benefit from being here, they can find it on their own, typing "disney planning board" into Google isn't really that hard.

I give suggestions for books and non-board websites, and tack on an offer to answer any questions that come up.

Additionally - I've never been on any message board that was appropriate for 10 year olds... Except ones that were aimed specifically at 10 year olds and moderated as such.

I think any internet message board can be negative. (Ever been on babycenter...yikes!!) And I don't think the negativity is new around here either. There has always been nasty postings (i.e. stollers for 5 year olds, pool hopping, refillable mugs...) It just so happens that there has been a lot of change lately, so there is something new to argue about.

But no, I would never recommend a message board to kids.

And for an adult, it's one of the tools I suggest, but after the Unofficial Guide, allearsnet and touringplans.

Yes I would recommend this site to adults.

I agree with you my kids were not on the internet un supervised at that age either, then again the new was very new when my older kids were that age, our youngest is a different story as she is only 15 now. 10 years ago there wsa very little if anything on these boards that I would not have wanted her reading unless maybe the old Bad shoe thread before it got it's own web address, she has always had a shoe thing going on. ;)

I agree with you on that, in my origianl post I said that you needed the good and bad info to make informed choices, it is not the less then stellar rating on WDW these days but shear anger and meaness to teh people that post things others don;t agree with, and it works both ways, the Poly Anna people along with the Grumps can come across very mean to each other not just the topic maybe I am just to much of a :hippie:

THIS. I start with the Unoffical guide then suggest websites based on the person's topic specific questions.

Agreed

I think any internet message board can be negative.

Actually, living every day can be negative if that's all a person focuses on.

But this specific question has to do with whether I would recommend this board to someone planning a Disney World trip. I would but with caution that the good AND the bad is mentioned and debated and discussed. I would not think my mother-in-law would enjoy the board but my son would. I think my granddaughter would take pause in some of the comments made so it might not be the best for her but I would encourage her to read it with my daughter-in-law (granddaughter is 15).

Has this board turned into such a negative place it's not helpful anymore? I don't think so but that's only my opinion. I have a very thick skin and will dismiss or ignore a poster I find, in my mind and my mind only, to be rude and that definition of rude is mine and mine alone.

This board is made up of unique individuals each with their own opinions, thoughts, ideas, and comments. Now, change the word "board" in the previous sentence with "world".
