Recommended Nikon or Cannon camera?

My Canon Rebel bit the dust. I'm looking for more of a point and shoot this time with great picture quality. I'm looking to spend around $400. Thx!

I just got a new DSLR (Canon ts3i) and love it. Are you sure you want to get a point and shoot. What type of pictures are you planning on taking? If they involve kids, especially sports, I'd recommend a DSLR and use the preprogrammed settings to function as a point and shoot. You'll end up with better pictures than a little point and shoot camera.

If you can afford it DSLRs can't be beat....

If I was going to get a P&S I'd get the Nikon1. It's small and you can change the lenses on it and the quality looks great.

It's all personal preference....Myself in particular I've had both Nikon and Canon point and shoot cameras. My current Canon blew the Nikon out of the water and the Nikon was more expensive. For my up coming trip in January I purchased a Canon T3i DSLR, I've yet to open it but from what I've tested at stores I'll stick with Canon for now.

**EDIT** Both Canon and Nikon are IMO the best cameras out there...so in reality you cannot go wrong with either..it all depends on what you need/want.

I use a Cannon SLR. My DS wanted a nice camera for Christmas so I looked around and for around $240 (Best Buy) on sale I got a Nikon S9300, memory card, case and battery. From testing it out at the stores it is a really nice point and shoot and the price was reasonable. I think the original price was $349. It has 16 megapixels and 18X optical zoom. I like the flexibility to use the manual camera functions so will stick with the Cannon SLR lines, but the Nikon was pretty nice for a point and shoot.

We have a Nikon D3100 and we LOVE it. I really need to sit down with the manual though so I can take fun/different pics. But it takes beautiful, picture postcard photos. We couldn't be any happier and with one quick flip of a switch we can video record. SO easy and now we don't have to lug around a video camera with us everywhere we go.

Best Buy had this one in their ad this week for $479.

I have a Canon EOS 60D DLSR and a Nikon Coolpix point and shoot.

I dislike the point and shoot so much that I'd just as soon use my iphone 5 as a camera if those were the only two choices I had.

What about a Canon G12 (I love my G11). It takes great pictures and it is kinda halfway between a DSLR and a little point and shoot.

I have the Canon s100 to carry when I don't want to carry my DSLR. It has the same manual controls as my DSLR with an adjustment ring on the lens to change the manual settings. I love it.

You might want to go the Photography Board on the DIS to see what they have to say. Everyone there shares their knowledge willingly and without judgement.

Well, I am still looking for a P&S. I tried one of the Nikon ones (bought it at Costco because I wasn't sure) and I HATED it. Since it had a touch screen it would randomly take pictures while in my purse/in my pocket. The battery door was very loose. I formerly had a Sony Cybershot and LOVED it. But they are expensive and I had two break on me (both times my fault - well, sort of - one someone taking my photo dropped it and the other time it got wet from a leaking water bottle. Now it can't keep a charge)

I had a Canon rebel and loved it. Switched over to Nikon d5100 and don't love it. Growing pains, I guess.

I use my big, heavy DLSR for sports, vacations, good photos and a small "pocketbook" camera for life's little moments or amusement parks.

My Canon DSLR still works fine, but it is huge and bulky and I need to "downsize"

I am looking at the smaller DSLRs on the market now and have asked about them on the Photography board......you can get some good ideas there.

I am still researching my options as each camera seems to have its plusses and minuses.

Do you want the capability to change lenses? Do you want to be able to shoot in RAW? Do you want video capability? Do you want to be able to add an external flash? Does it need to fit in your pocket or would your purse? Or will you keep it in a camera bag (which would mean various size options.)

What I have decided for ME is that I want one I can keep with me all the time in my purse. It doesn't have to be pocket size (although that would be a bonus), and I really do want the option to add an external flash. I haven't decided about lenses yet. I also want video and the ability to shoot in RAW.

I looked at the touch screen camera and had the same thoughts. Why make it touch to take a picture? There was no way we weren't going to 100 pictures by accident. That's why I went with a different model.

I have a Sony cyber shot. I love it!

We husband has an expensive DSLR and we have a hard time telling who took the pic.

My mom and daughter also bought one.

Are you sure you want to get a point and shoot. What type of pictures are you planning on taking?

Nothing fancy, just pictures of the kids.

Wow, thank you for the great responses! To clarify, I mainly want a p&s so I can put it in a case and throw it in my bag. But I also want great pictures.
I only used the Auto button on my Rebel, so I feel like it was a waste. I also hated dragging the camera bag, taking off the lens cap, etc.
I would also like to have no lag time on the camera.
