:goodvibes HI
I have just booked tickets to see Phantom of the Opera as my daughters belated birthday treat, which she postponed until her GCSEs were finished, and we have decided to travel by train and stay overnight. Can anyone recommend the following in London:

1. a good value hotel
2. any good value restaurants
3. any cheap activities for the rest of the time we are there (have already done the imperial war museum, natural history, British and science museums).

Thank you :goodvibes

I can't really help you with your questions, but I just wanted to say that I saw Phantom a few years ago and it was fantastic.

Hope you have a great time and good luck to your daughter with her exams.

Not too sure about hotels as I'm only 30 minutes away. Our favourite family meal spot is TGI Fridays just off Picadilly Circus.

As for cheap activities you've still got the V&A museum, national Gallery, national Portrait Gallery and tate Modern which don't charge for entry. Spend some time in the parks (I particualrly like Kensington Gardens) or just do some window shopping at harrods. Also you can often 2 for 1 admissions for attractions if you're travelling by train.

P.S. The shift key is sticking!

If you want to spend a bit more then there's a really trendy hotel called The Hoxton which is also reasonable. I got two nights there in June for £70 per night.

The Hoxton doesn't allow children. I'm not sure what the minimum age is, but they wouldn't even give us a rate for late June.

We have just stayed (March) in the Novotel Euston and can definitely recommend the hotel (even Americans recommended it and they have very high standards). It is positioned close to Euston, Kings Cross and St Pancreas stations and also close to the underground. It has very modern rooms and a fantastic buffet breakfast.

The cheapest thing you can do is simply sightsee, a walk round Harrods is very entertaining too though ultimately I would recommend a circuit on the London Eye.

A trip to the flagship store of Forbidden Planet on Shatfesbury Avenue for lots of Pirates of the Caribbean and Tim Burton merchandise!

Thanks everyone. I think we will have to visit some of the art galleries as the kids are both artists. I fancy a picnic lunch in a park somewhere. We may eat at Planet Hollywood (we have been offered a 20% off voucher ) or Hard Rock Cafe. The Forbidden Planet shop will now have to be on the agenda - if the kids have any money left after DLRP. Still debating on the hotels, but I will have a look at the Novotel and the Travel Inn. Unfortunately London Eye is not an option as DS is scared of heights. Any more suggestions and advice gratefully received.

Another vote for the TGI Fridays near Piccadilli (Coventry Street I think).

have stayed at the Travel Inn County Hall and liked it a lot - great location and reasonable.

I am also terrified of heights, but survived the London eye just fine. For what it's worth.

I have now booked the hotel - we have gone with the Travelodge in Covent Garden for only £26 per room, which meant we could book 2 rooms, a double for DH and I and a twin for the kids. It also gets really good reviews on Trip Advisor. I think it's a bargain, I was expecting to pay at least £90 for a family room in London!
