We are building a new home, and it won't be long before it will be ready and I have been thinking about window treatments. At our current home, we have faux wood blinds - white in color with 2 inch slats.

What type of window treatment do you have in your home? Do you like it, or wish you have something different?

What do you think of wooden blinds? We love the look of wooden blinds like maple, or oak or even natural ...instead of painted white..but how do you make sure that it goes with everything else that will be in the home - carpet color, kitchen cabinet, furniture....

Thanks!!

Chellie

So many views, but no one wants to share what kind of window treatments they have?

I have the 2 inch faux wood blinds from Home Depot in white too. I LOVE them.

I think you should match your blinds to the trim in your room. We have white trim in the room and around the window so we have white blinds. Save the color for any swags, curtains, valances etc. I love plantation shutters too, but we just have the 2" blinds which are functional and do look nice.

In my living room/dining room we have dark wood trim. On those windows I have a woven bamboo shade. That looks awesome with the dark wood. White blinds would look terrible in there, and I wouldn't like the bamboo shades in the rooms with the white trim.

We don't have window coverings on most of the windows in the house. The bedrooms have tab top drapes (floor length in the master, window length in DD's room). The guest room has mini blinds, cream color set into the bay window. The living room has a cornice box over the bay window (DH built it for me). Dining room has a cornice box over the french doors (DH again). No window treatments at all in the den/kitchen--the windows are all red oak french windows. Some are floor to ceiling with a door, others are windows. Since the house is situated in a way that no one can look in, we just took down all the white mini blinds that were here when moved in, decided we liked the way it looks and left it alone. If we lived in a colder climate it might not work, but for us, it's the right solution.

I have similar house as 3 of my neighbors--we have with octagonal sunroom with all windows in family room next to it with open floorplan. We have nothing, with valances in sunroom and drapes in family room. Other has white wooden blinds, other has dark wooden lblinds, other has very light wooden blinds. 4 houses, all look very different. The dark and even the light wood ones make the rooms look smaller and more closed in--even in an open floorplan. The white ones do not seem to affect the look/size of the room. If you have 2 story rooms, or very interresting windows, plantation shutter get a real WOW factor--of course they have to be custom and are $$--but I just saw some on 2 story family room windows (with curves at the top) that looked great. Valances are pretty much out---but I still love them in my sunroom. Pottery Barn is a good place to look to get an idea of waht is in fashion now. Elaine

Me too! White faux wood/real wood blinds, plantation shutters, and natural blinds (like a bamboo) are popular here. Then to layer on top, many people go with Pottery Barn drapes, Restoration Hardware drapes, or Country Curtains.

I also have solid roman shades in my bedroom.

I have white plantation shutters and I LOOOOOOOOVE them! They are bold, classy, beautiful and SUPER EASY to clean! They were spendy but I wouldn't change a thing!!!

I am planning to get rid of sheer curtains and replace with plantation shutters. Our Master BR and Ba are being remodeled, as soon as that is done will spend $$$ to get the shutters for almost every room. Guest BR has matchstick shades, love that look for that room.

I have Hunter Douglas silhouettes and illuminettes. I got them because they stack up very small and we always keep our windows uncovered except in winter when we want the insulation. When down, we can have them open to see out so there is never a dark feeling.

sorta off the topic.. but we have the same blinds in a open area (great room and dinning room). One of our blinds string broke this can't open it. Anyone know if this can be fixed?

We have the 2in white wooden (maybe faux wooden?) blinds and they have a white molding at the top in every room except our dining room, where we do have curtains. I love our blinds. I don't like wooden just because they can make it darker. Now that I have the molding (here when we bought it), I can't stand the idea of taking it down and doing any valances or curtains. I love it!! It would be easy to remove, but man does it look nice, and it really gives the rooms finished looks.

All of our bedroom windows are 2" wood blinds in white with white ribbon to match the window trim. For years we didn't have anything on our windows at the back of our house: we recently added black-out type curtains to our bonus room and living room and we still have nothing on our kitchen windows. We have curtains and sheers on the front office/guest room, living room and dining room. My bathroom has honeycomb shades in those windows.

My friend has a new (to her) home and the previous owner put in the windows with the cellular shades INSIDE them. Not all of the windows, but the french door leading to the back yard and a few other high traffic areas. I love love love love love them! When we put in a new door leading from our kitchen to our deck that's what I'm getting. They never get dirty!

Belle - I know you posted this in February, almost a whole year ago.

Yes - the blind strings can be restrung. There is a place in Milwaukee that we've taken our blinds to, and it was CHEAP - I'm thinking $5 or $7 per string (they will do all of the strings), For an approximately 6'x6' window -the blind cost about $35 to be restrung. Much cheaper than a new blind.

We have Bali wood blinds that match our front door & pillar/post things outside. (What are those things called anyway?) :rotfl: We waited until JCPenney was having a SUPER huge blind sale & bought for all of our windows. We LOVE them b/c they look so nice & rustic :thumbsup2

I hate blinds! I have them in the bathrooms and kids rooms only. All other rooms have curtains or heavy lined drapes.
