I'm looking for a mobile internet solution that will act as both backup internet in my daily life as well as either backup or primary internet when on travel (read DVC WDW/DLR). What are y'all using?

My wish list and constraints:
  • AT&T and Verizon are the only cell towers available for much of my life. I'm likely looking for a 3rd party cellular data plan that runs over one of these?
  • I'm looking for 5GB/m minimum as a backup plan. If the price were very attractive I might go for a 25GB/m plan making it a primary internet for certain tasks.
  • Speed should be no less than 1Mb down / 500kbps up. Symmetrical or faster speeds would be much appreciated, of course.
  • For this search, assume all domestic travel to urban locations.
Thank you!

Interesting timing. AT&T just launched a new promotion through Oct that might be a workable solution: http://www.att.com/shop/wireless/data-plans.html#fbid=L9Z77qooLD5

Short version: A shared pool of 40GB of 4G data speeds might run about $180/month (using an available discount) shared across a Mobile Internet device, 2 iPads and a phone. Hmm, might be workable.
The other thing the AT&T family share plan does is allow a capable phone to act as a hot spot for no additional cost.

Verizon does this also.
Yeah, but when I tried this a couple weeks back on my iPhone 5S (before iOS 8), it worked in a limited test mode then hung when it counted. :(

I'd feel a lot safer using a dedicated Mobile Internet device. (My context of 'safer' has far less to do w/ security than performance. I need to count on the service working when I need it.)

I've used Verizon for a few years and in the past couple of years have found it to be reliable even using a device as a hot spot with the exception of if I'm in a fringe zone where it goes between 4g and 3g. But that's usually been in quite rural locations.

Well, I use Sprint towers with truly unlimited data and get quite acceptable 4G speeds (6/4). Sprint is, of course, in all major population centers. My 3rd party company also sells truly unlimited Verizon packages but they aren't cheap (for those who want premium service). They'll also have t-Mobile unlimited here in the next week. Msg me for details.

This can happen with dedicated lines as well.

Well, I've been watching this week's mobile data carrier wars with great interest. Seems like my quest came at a great time.

For now, I chose to upgrade my home internet (satellite) multiplying both my monthly cap (x6!) and my speed (x8). Yeah! For now, that gives me a bit more breathing room while I continue monitoring the mobile data options ...
