I had a DSLR (D70) and sold it, not because of photo quality but because I never wanted to lug it around. (I have an 8 year old and 2 year old twins and need to travel lean and mean)

I'm looking for a small digital camera that has at least 6mp and not horrific shutter lag. I don't want a Sony because I don't want to use proprietary memory sticks, but either SD or CF cards are fine. I prefer Nikon or Canon.

I mostly shoot my kids (daily stuff, activities, travel) and mostly scrapbook the pictures. I do make enlargements, hence my wanting higher mp's.

I currently have a Canon A95, which is ok, but the shutter lag blows. I KNOW I won't match DSLR shutter speed with a compact camera, but also know things improve quickly in the digicam world. Any suggestions for me?

This is really going to be a challenge for you. Going from the D70 down to a PnS the shutter lag even on one of the better PnS is going to bug you! That's the main reason I upgraded to the DSLRs.

This Canon A640 looks pretty good to me for that type of camera. Both my brother and my wife have the A610 which does take great pictures. I personally don't like the way Canon transfers the pictures to the computer on that camera, but that's a small thing.

Check out the A640 on Digital Reviews.

It might not be small enough for you, but why not go with the D40. You will still have the advantages of a DSLR, but smaller than D70. On sale today at Beach Camera for $559.

If it was the need for extra lenses etc... then you might look at the canon S3. It isn't a whole lot smaller than a rebel XT, but you don't need the extras that go with the dSLR.

Thanks for the replies. I *know* the shutter lag is a pain, but I just can't keep track of all the kids, their respective stuff, and lug around a "big" camera. So, I ended up never using it and sold it.

I've been looking at the S3--that may be a decent choice for me. My dream would be one of those sexy, slim numbers with zero shutter lag. :rotfl2: Hey, a girl can dream!

Ok, I've been reading...it looks like the D40 is pretty small and that may be a good option after all. It's not that much more than the S3! But lenses are another story...

Still, it appeals to me!
