Recommend a Starter SLR

If you keep checking, you'll always find lots of XTi's going up for sale. Since the instant rebates for the 40D went on sale, lots of folks have been upgrading like mad. Hence the large numbers of XT and XTi's on the for sale forums.

I like my Nikon D80. It ain't the D300, but it's going for pretty cheap right now w/ basic kit lens. I do a ton of low light concert and show photography and have used the 50mm1.8 prime ($100) and the 85mm 1.8 prime (about$399). They are both excellent for low light photography and they AF on the D80. I tend to use them more often than not in Manual mode anyway, but that's just my choice.

The camera works great, I know this is a littl higher than your price range, but I think you will like this camara better than a rebel

After going to the camera shop and handling the XTI I feel like it's going to be a good starter DSLR for me. I know very little about lenses, but I thought the ones offered in the deal I posted above would be usable in most situations. Correct me if I'm wrong. As I said most of what I will be using this camera for are low light rock concerts and taking pix of my kids. Because he isn't offering it with the original lens kit I thought I might pick that up also since I've found it for around $100. Really I just wondered if his deal was that good, I think the one lens he has is around $350 new and he claims he's only had this set up for 18 months and has taken around 7k in photos.

The kit lens brings you 18-55 f/3.5 - 5.6. It's not even worth buying if you'll already have the 24-85.

For low light concerts, only the 50mm f/1.8 will do the trick and if you're up close.

If you want wideness, and ur on a budget, then consider the 18-55 IS, the new "kit lens" if you can find one. It's about $175 on adorama.com

The camera grip will help when taking vertical shots. The opteka grip has gotten decent reviews and is a popular choice as a 3rd party battery grip.

THe 24-85 is a curious lens. It's not a standard "kit lens" so I guess he bought it. Why? I have no idea. It wouldn't be a lens that I would purchase if I'm trying to upgrade a lens.
