Reco for Rome hotel?

Hi - we're doing the Central Italy trip on June 10th (so excited), and at the end of the trip we'll be spending a couple of days in Rome.

Does anyone have a good hotel recommendation for a family of 4, that isn't too expensive but is still relatively centrally located (ie Spanish Steps)? The one that ABD stays at for the Viva Italia trip is a bit pricey (because we'd need to get 2 rooms).

Normally, I'd splurge on the nicest hotel, but we've already shelled out a lot for the trip, airfare, stopover in Paris, etc.

Not complaining...but trying to save a few pennies so I can splurge on a new Italian purse or shoes

We are doing the June 17th Central Italy trip, and doing the same thing at the back end. We are staying in Rome for an additional 4 nights. We booked the Hotel Lancelot. Not sure how central it is to the Spanish Steps, I think it is closer to the Colosseum and Forum area which is where we wanted to stay. But the rates were pretty reasonable. There are 3 of us, so we could do it in one room. Good Luck and have fun.

We're just back from Rome on a half- term trip and can highly recommend Hotel Artemide. It's about 5-10 minutes from the Trevi Fountain (my 5yo is a slow walker, she moseys) and the family room slept 4, which is a rare find in Rome. The value was good and the rate included breakfast (a really lovely buffet) as well as a free stocked mini-bar (water, beer, juice and soda) as well as nuts and cookies. It came in handy after a day out walking and they restocked daily. (and it was free!)

Tripadvisor has good reviews. As it is on Via Nazionale, a higher end shopping area, there wasn't much immediate choice for few but a short (safe) walk away is the Monti neighborhood with plenty of osterias and restaurants to choose from (go to La Carbonara, best meal we had there, and true Roman food. Just get a reservation via the hotel front desk - and make sure it is the one in Monti and not the one in Campo dei Fiori)

Hi - I highly recommend Hotel 21. It's located in between the Spanish Steps and St. Peter's in one of the safest areas in Rome. I travel there often after studying there (fell in love with Rome!) and always pick that as my go to hotel. It comes with free breakfast.

There are so many good hotels in Rome, but I can recommend Hotel Abruzzi(I remember paying around $200/nt in May). You can check the reviews out here....

If you don't mind looking at one of the best preserved(and architecturally magnificent) buildings in the world from your window it could be for you(check T/A photos). The piazza it is on is one of the more active as well. The rooms are small(typical European), and the staff was excellent ..but it does not have 5-Star amenities if that is what you're looking for.

You will probably pay anywhere from $300 upwards to $1000 per night. Depends what your looking for and when. You need to start your search here....

Thanks all for your input. I've been going to hotels.com a lot to check hotel prices. I've also been checking homeaway.com to see if there are any good short-term rentals...but for 2 days, it might be easier to stick to a hotel.

I can't believe our trip is just about 3 months away! I'm so excited. I bought our plane tix already...I paid a little more so I could have more direct/shorter flights and fly a newer aircraft.

I just now need to lose 10lbs so I look fabulous as I'm walking through Italy!

Then you will blend in well ...as Italians take great pride in looking fabulous, especially in the big cities. We call Rome the city of Black Suits. It is very intimidating -including Florence and Milan where there are so many beautiful people! I think I'm more of a Tuscan-type myself.

I hate to say this, but I really hope your airline doesn't change your flights. I can't tell you how many times I've done what you did, and then had the airline (mostly Delta, but they all do it) switch the flights to a less direct flight or older aircraft. Seems like it should be illegal, but it's not. (I'm flying to Maui in May, and my return flight went to LA, then straight from LA to Columbus. They've now switched it to LA to Atlanta to Columbus, which adds over 4 hours to my trip home. And I can't find any direct flights from LA to Columbus now).

Recently returned from trip to Rome - ex hotelier so very fussy - Babuino 181 was superb... boutiquey and not cheap but exceptional rooms , location and service.
Tripadvisor is always best source!

Probably a little late but we loved Albergo del Senato. Our room overlooked the Pantheon and it has a wonderful rooftop bar with great views of Rome.

I ended up booking Hotel Sant'Anna, which is near the Vatican. It came highly recommended by a co-worker, and when I checked out the rooms, I was pleased to see a relatively spacious room that could accommodate 4 (they have 1 queen bed and 2 singles). Its supposed to be really nice, and the room rate is very reasonable and it comes with a free breakfast.

Its a good 15 minute walk from Spanish Steps, but that's not too far and I figure I'll pay for taxis if my kids are too tired.

....and no trip to Rome would be complete without at least one cab ride! Have a great trip.
