Anyone with reclining furniture have problems with their cats or dogs getting underneath while the chair is in the recline position? Do recliners & pets not go well together?

Survival of the fittest. They will learn to move;)

ETA--just kidding--I'm really not an animal hater

The only thing I can think of is to fill up the space with a little polyester stuffing (if you can get the stuffing to stay in there). Otherwise, well, not much you can do about it. A cat's gonna go where a cat's gonna go.

We had a pair of brother/sister kittens that liked to hide when we were gone usually in the closets but sometimes under the couch or one other special place. We learned about this special hiding place when we hadn't seen them one evening but assumed they were hiding in the closet again so decided to start dinner. They came running out from under the stove like their tails were on fire the minute I lit the oven in the really old gas stove that was in our apartment (they weren't on fire but boy did they move:laughing:). The really funny part - they still kept crawling under that stove.:rolleyes1

ETA - Oops - misunderstood your post - I've had a lot of cats and always had a recliner and never had the cat crawl in or under the recliner.

Yeah, this is one reason we got rid of the recliner. My one cat kept getting in there. But my parents have always had recliners and cats and never had that problem.

I should add, that this was an old chair that was sitting in my office, so it wasn't a main piece of furniture. So it was easier to get rid of.

Our dog always goes under the recliner when it's up. We just know to watch for her. The cat...she makes you move your feet over to make room for her on the footrest! :rotfl:

All of our couches recline and we have never had an issue with our dog climbing under the furniture when its reclined, then again Champ can't even come close to fitting in there :lmao: He does have a tendency to lay under our feet when we are reclining so its hard to get up when he is laying there, we have learned to just climb around him or tell him to get up

Its never been a problem at our house, our animals are always ON the recliner not under it :rotfl2:

All of our living room furniture is Lazy Boy so it all reclines. We have a bull mastiff/rot mix and a pekingese. Both love to crawl under your feet when you recline. Neither one has learned to not lay under the foot rest. We, on the other hand, have learned to look or feel with our feet for them. The big dog doesn't care and will not move. You have to climb around him. The little one jumps if you touch her with your foot.

LOL!!

Hey, we used to have a recliner and thinking of getting one again! Glad you posted about this, I forgot that our cats used to get under it.
My DH did close the it on a cat once, the cat did not go under it again.

The cat has no interest in getting under the recliners, but the dogs occasionally do. They learn to move, pronto. :lmao: We also know when they're there, so we can tell them to move or we'll slowly put the footrest down.

Our 45 pound dog (in my avatar) likes to curl up ON the footrest at our feet. That can't be good for the footrest, but none of us can resist that warm body between our feet. :goodvibes

Yes, it can be a pain for people with cats. Our 2 dogs now could not fit under the recliner so no problems there.;)
