Recliner from Special Needs Requests?

You folks are becoming my "go to" group for disABILITY info. On the Disney website, when making a reservation, they have a list of special needs that one can request. One item on this checklist was a recliner. Am I correct in thinking that they would place a recliner in the room (or villa), for a person that has sleeping flat issues,or trouble breathing while in a normal bed? Has anyone else made such a request or know exactly how this request is honored? Is there an additional charge?? This would be a lifesaver in our case, and would save us lugging a wedge along. Looking forward to any replies on this.
Thanks.

I have heard that they try and supply special requests needed. You give them a call at this number and explain your situation to them.

Special Reservations Line: (407) 939-7807 - option 1

Good luck:thumbsup2

Hi and :welcome: to DisBoards and disABILITIES!

I do not think that special reservations would handle that. It is designed for reserving accessible rooms.

Normally small medical equipment, such as shower chairs, are available at each resort thorugh housekeeping.

You may need to click on where it says "disABILTIES" at the top of this page it will take you to the Index. One of the top items is the "disABILTIES FAQ" which will gives lots of useful information. Post #2 talks about wheelchair, ECV medical equipment and van rentals. You would have to arrange for the rental from and offsire vendor, such as Care Medical Equipment, and they would coordinate with the resort for the removal of a bed and replacement with a recliner for your length of stay. I do not think this would be a no-charge item from Disney. You might also check with your insurance company to ask about coverage.

Or, if you want an easier route, click on the link in my signature.

I thought that since Disney has a "special needs" form on their website, that they would attempt to try and accommodate as many as possible requests and if not possible they would advise at that point. That is why I suggested that they call special reservations desk since they must be somehow tied in with the special needs form checklist.

The most recent Guidebooks for Guests with Disabilities from WDW that I have, published in January 2008, do not list recliners.
I am not certain, but I believe in the past WDW possibly arranged for rental for guests and did not actually supply them. Since it is listed on the website, I'd suggest you email them and ask your question.

The only people I know of who have used a recliner in the past arranged it thru an outside rental company, as Cheshire Figment posted.

Unless things have changed, recliners are not supplied or delivered by WDW although they are able to be rented from outside medical vendors who have the ones where the back lifts up to help someone stand. Seems odd that a recliner would be noted on the medical special needs form.---Kathy
