Recent trip - thoughts on navigating with no FP and young kids

Hopefully Genie+ with all of its issues will be implemented soon and this will be a non-issue, but for people who are waffling about making the trip without FP, here are some things we experienced that made this trip significantly different from previous trips (for reference we have a 10 year old girl, and then 8, 5, 3 year old boys):

1. By far the most obnoxious is RSR. To ride this without a 60 minute wait, you have to be there at least 30 mins before rope drop - preferably sooner - and you have to run to the ride. Period. The number of people sprinting to radiator springs at 9am/whatever is gross and I can't believe Disney sits there and watches it happen. That said, I'm not going to hang back with my boys so we can be behind 500 people - why do I go to the gym every day if it's not to jog to Cars land with a 50 lb preschooler on my hip, haha - but it's so ridiculous and probably the key factor in dissatisfaction as it relates to this trip vs other trips.

2. Haunted Mansion - also not good. It's never great this time of year, but with FP there was never a wait and it was one my kids like to re-ride. The first time we tried to ride it was also an hour, wrapped around over to the French market. We were able to get to that one the next day because it was a Disneyland start day (more on that later) but when there's a decent number of 45-60 min wait rides, you can't ride them all first thing!

3. This probably isn't changing any time soon, but not being able to park hop until 1pm and having to choose which park a month in advance really puts a damper on things. Out of 3 days, we only had one DL start day (because RSR is so important to my boys and clearly there was no chance of riding with a 3 and 5 year old unless we were starting at DCA) so that was the only day we could ride Haunted Mansion without wasting an hour in line.

4. Other rides had weirdly tolerable waits for a good chunk of the day - Soarin, GOTG, even toy story. Those were still best before 12 though. Some had awful waits for no particular reason (Monsters - 35 minute wait.)

5. Even with virtual queue (which may not be a thing anymore?), web slingers was still 30-45 wait each time. ROTR was about 40 mins each time.

6. Because we spent so much time in line for big ticket rides, we really didn't have time for the smaller rides. I can't think of any Fantasyland rides we went on. Typically in 3 days we have ridden every single ride at least once with many re-rides. This trip was a struggle just to hit all the big rides.

This was all the first week of November, a week we have gone every year for 5 years. Crowds were probably about the same as they always are - relatively a pretty slow week. I can't imagine what lines would have been like with worse crowds.

Is waiting in line soul crushing? Not always but when it's a steady stream of 30+ min waits on every single rides, that adds up. Did we feel SIGNIFICANTLY less productive than normal trips? Yes. Did we feel like we got our money's worth this time? No. Would we ever go back without fastpass? Absolutely not. We have 4 kids, make 1-2 trips a year for 3-4 days each with park hoppers. We are planning on going to Atlantis in the Bahamas instead of DLR in the spring, and that might be the beginning of our slow transition out of Disney trips. Paying $1800 over 3 days to feel like you didn't even get to ride everything you wanted to - and we were there from rope drop until close - is just kind of gross. I would tell parents of young children to strongly consider delaying a trip until some sort of fastpass is in place, because it just isn't the same and definitely feels more like a chore. It was fun to go and our kids had fun but it wasn't the same and they aren't asking to go back, if that tells you anything :)

Definitely understand your disappointment! The wait times have been so bad lately. They weren’t bad in mid September, but with the holidays coming it’s just gotten worse. Add to that the no FP, impossible to get dining reservations, lack of shows, the park reservation system, no trams, food service reduced in both availability and variety… I’m really ready for the much-ballyhooed “new” Genie+ And to find out how that will change the dynamic, hopefully for the better.

I agree with everything in your OP. We went Nov. 10-13. The only thing that saved our trip was being able to use a DAS for my daughter. We were able to walk around and keep moving instead of just standing in a line. There is no way she could have just stood in lin for 60 minutes or more for HM or 90 minutes for RSR. If we hadn't had her DAS the trip would hav been a mess.

Have you taken the family to Atlantis before? If so you liked it I take it? Just heard of its existence recently and now you mention it also. Wondering if it might be worth a look or maybe do a cruise instead of another DL trip if things don't get sorted soon.

We were there November 19-21 and had similar experiences. We never made it on Monsters Inc because it was always broken down or had a 35 minute wait.
Our first rope drop day, November 19, was rough with Indiana Jones, Pirates, Haunted Mansion and Peter Pan all down.
We had a great trip overall, and got on RSR at rope drop. Never made it on Web Slingers due to no virtual queue, and 80 minute waits.
I can’t wait for Genie plus. I agree, would be hard to go back without it again.

Yep-- you are summing it up well. We were there Oct. 6-10, and this is the first time we didn't feel like we got our money's worth on a DLR trip . We usually go to DLR in the busy summer season too. Almost 2 months later, we are still sitting around and someone will see a commercial for Disney or something on tv and say "I'm so sad we didn't get to ride....... or do ...... on our trip". We didn't get near done what we usually do. We didn't have time to shop like we usually do. We didn't have time for Animation Academy which we all love. In 5 days, we didn't even get to ride all the rides, which we always do. We missed so much this trip. Plus, we spent from 6:45 a.m. to 12:01 pm stressed out every day trying to get VQ (in 5 days we only got ROTR once which was a priority for DH and DD as we are a family of big Star Wars fans and had never ridden it before). We will not go back without Genie + or some sort of FP system. I really wish we would just get Maxpass back the way it was with ROTR and WS added, and keeping their standby line. Maxpass was great.

A lot of cruises are turning things that used to cost extra like Wifi into free benefits for 2022 to attract customers, especially since some people are unable to do cruises do to travel restrictions or are afraid of getting on cruise ships given what happened in Japan at the beginning of the pandemic. If you're fully vaccinated and OK with the potential risks, it could be a good time to take a cruise. Ships are sailing at lower capacities and with fewer ships, the destinations are going to be less packed so cruises may be even more relaxing than in the pre-pandemic times.

I agree! Went went the same week and we won't be back until most everything is back to normal, and I never expect to go as many times a year as we have in the past. I knew how to move around the park and optimize our time. This trip was awful as far as rides. I'm not willing to wait much over 15 minutes for a ride. We ended up around the pool a large majority of the time(which is fine for us). I'm actually selling my Grand Californian points. It was a tough decision, but I'm not happy with a lot of things Disney is currently doing, and I figured it was time to put my money where my mouth is. Maybe 5 years from now the magic will be back for us, but for now we are moving on.

right? super crazy. I'm all for teaching (neurotypical) kids to wait in line, but 60 mins is not really developmentally appropriate for a 3 year old, and it's a ride based on a kids movie for crying out loud! I'm glad you were able to wander instead of standing there :)

We haven't, but my brother in law did when his kids were about the age of mine and said it was amazing. My kids love water anyway and my boys are on the high end of active!

definitely things like animation academy we had no time for, and my daughter loves going there! the whole thing was just kind of chaotic and stressful, for sure!!

yes it was really frustrating that there was basically no good strategy. you pick the couple of rides important to you at rope drop, and after that it's all a crapshoot. My 3 year old was the one who really missed out, because we spent so much time waiting for big rides that he didn't get to go on Dumbo or any of the little fantasyland rides I'm sure he would have loved. Instead we dragged him on GOTG so he could tell me "Mom, that was not fun at all!"
