Recent car renters from Honolulu airport?

I think the confusion is that there are some companies that have been offsite, and still maintain an office and lot offsite on Nimitz Highway, but also now have cars on site in the parking garage. I think it's all a little newish that they're doing this, in anticipation of the eventual car facility (which isn't slated till 2020, I think). I'm pretty sure I saw enterprise in the garage the other day, but I know for a fact that they still have a location off site. I think the best option is calling the direct number to the specific company in honolulu, not their main number and ask. I think a lot of the website info is simply not as up to date as it could be.

As for the difference in the length of walking, that may be dependent upon which airline you arrive on. Hawaiian arrives at the western-most terminal, the others are east of that. The check-in area are definitely spread along a long terminal (not unlike Orlando's long drop-off roads), and if baggage claim is similarly spread out, your mileage (walkage?) may vary.

We rented National two weeks ago. We flew in on Hawaiian and out on United. We could have walked to the car but took a short shuttle. When we dropped the car off we just walked across the street to the terminal. Very easy.

I was searching for car rental threads in the Aulani forum and I found this one, so after doing some research I thought I would share. We are currently looking for a rental car for a week in September, usually I book ahead of time and then just watch to see if the price drops.

On Cheap Rental Car dot com, it compares all of the car rental companies. With HNL airport plugged in, the following came up next to each company.
Enterprise: Shuttle
Alamo: Shuttle
National: Shuttle
Thrifty: Shuttle
Budget: In-terminal counter
Dollar: Shuttle
Hertz: In-terminal counter
Avis: In-terminal counter

Hope this helps, not sure how accurate it is but that's what the website showed.

We are renting with Hertz - so I'm hoping this is right and we can avoid a shuttle! We don't mind walking a bit to get to the rental counter, especially after a 10+ hour flight!!!

Car rental choices are driving me crazy.:crazy2: We are going on NCL's Pride of America the week before our stay at Aulani. I have been researching car rentals from the airport when we get back to go to Aulani. My AAA travel advisor is trying to get me a rental from the ship terminal through Hertz (AAA discount applies). It seems easier rather than taking a shuttle back to the airport to take another shuttle to the car rental sites. Does anyone know which car rental companies are available at Aulani? If I could rent at the ship terminal and return at Aulani it might be easier. Someone on another post said that they were able to return their Alamo rental at Aulani.

I don't know the answer to your question unfortunately, but I can tell you the last time I flew into Honolulu, I rented a car from Alamo. The line there was the longest line I have ever seen at a rental car place. It literally took 2 hours to get through the line. At the time, there was a separate line for Alamo Insiders (their rewards program) that had virtually no people. I'm not sure if it's still that way or not, but if you are going to rent from Alamo in Honolulu, definitely sign up for Alamo Insiders on the off chance that it will save you 2 hours in check-in time.

Alamo Insiders also saves you 5% (I think) - free to sign up so why not!?

We're booked with Alamo right now but I'm thinking if they have a shuttle, I'd rather book with another company that doesn't.

We rented from Hertz and had to take a very quick shuttle ride.

I think from reading everyone's responses about their experiences, it appears you CAN take a shuttle ride to the on-airport garage and counters for Hertz, Budget, Avis, but you can still opt to walk (albeit a hike) if you choose...the shuttle is not mandatory to get to the cars.

That's how I'm reading the posts too...

We just got back from our trip and used Alamo. They also have an office at Aulani. The line was really long when we arrived to rent, but we used the kiosk to check in, and the process was very fast. They were handling the large quantities of renters really well.
