Our band has really excelled in their class over the last two to three years. Now one of the big goals is to grow the band. (We are only 50 some musicians and 20 something color guard.)

I love the video they put together. I think it does capture the fun and spirit of marching band.

I should have mentioned that their show this year was called "the balance". It was about the struggle between good and evil and was from Lion King. It was quite dramatic.

That's a really cute video! Brought back all my HS & college band memories! It can be tough, though, to grow the marching band. Does the marching band include all the band students? I know my HS had some band students who didn't march, so we had a concert and and the marching band in the fall, and then symphonic band & concert band after marching season. Recruiting more non-marchers might be a good way to go, or even talking to band members in the middle or jr high schools.

This is an all boys private high school. They do have concert bands, etc, but I believe everyone marches. Marching band is their favorite! They recruit girls from nearby all girls schools. The band director has been making a huge effort to visit all of the feeder grade schools and that was part of his reason for putting this promo video together too.

My husband went to this same high school and the band was closer to 100 members then. I think changes in leadership cause lots of fluctuation. This is our director's 4th year and I am really hoping he stays awhile.

Did I mention.... they are going to WDW in June!

I think the cool thing about having kids in band is seeing all of the different styles of the bands around! Your band is a different style than ours, but the bottom line is that the kids have a blast, and form great, tight, lasting friendships with other kids.

My DS goes to a high school with over 3000 kids, so being in band (about 250 strong) has been awesome for him. It gives him a niche...he feels part of something, and not just one of 3000... Plus, for the most part, kids in band are GOOD kids. ;)

I'm in my college's marching band right now. I had the most amazing time, and partially attribute my success in college socially to marching band.

The rehearsals for shows are intense, mostly because over half of the incoming freshman have not had marching experience before (like I did). Three times a week for an hour and a half, with Saturday game days and a full week of marching band camp in 95 degree weather, but the memories will last a lifetime. I made so many new friends, and have lots of connections now for a future teaching career.

Like the PP said, marching band has helped me find my niche in college, and now I know about 122 other people that I wouldn't have known otherwise. It is truly awesome.

And yes, our sousas do dance:rotfl:

I wish my daughter had marching band but we are lucky to even have a band at all. The remaining district band teacher retires this year, so we might be bandless next year.

Our high school has about 600 kids, and about 80-100 are in band each year. Both my kids were (are in now) in band, and loved it! They start practicing in the summer so the incoming freshmen already have 80 new friends; band camp (2 weeks of daily practices at the HS, one week of away camp) REALLY bonds them, football games are fun, they meet other kids from other schools, band shows are fun...

They like to say that Friday nights is an outside band show where some football players show up.

In our school, band tends to attract the top achieving kids, when my daughter graduated 70% of the top 10% of the graduating class were in band. I remember when my oldest was in middle school, someone told me that ALL of the kids in band were good, NONE were goof-offs - I thought she was naive. I have to tell you, I think she is 99% right!

It helps that our band director is awesome, he treats the kids like adults and they respond to that.

My cousins were very active int heir high school marching band (Kennesaw Moutian High). They were always one of the top rated marching bands around the Atlanta area participating in lots of BOA competitions. The band even went to London to march and marched in the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade...I think there was a Rose Bwol appearance too. Now that her boys have graduated, my aunt is happy to have her life back. She was so involved in the band boosters and band stuff......

My oldest cousin, after graduating high school, was offered an internship by BOA to come work in Indianapolis and help with running competitions. He moved up to Indy for a year, and then worked out of Atlanat while he was in college. Last year he started work as the assistant to the band driector at Georgia State (new program). I am so proud of him. Also, this May he is getting married to his high school sweetheart who was in band with him (color guard/winter guard) for a 4 years of high school.

I think leadership very much has a lot to do with this (funny, just got an email as I was typing this from Music for All -Bands of America :lmao:). When I was in high school our marching band was the top in the nation (parade). They won the grand national parade championship several times. We had amazing band directors (I was in orchestra though). They were about 300 members strong. The director left several years ago and the new director just isn't as good. They have 50 members and are just terrible.

Our marching band is the best in the area. We have about 185 members and do well at national caliber competitions. It is an amazing experience for the kids. Many kids from our band program go on to march in college as well. One of DD's friends marched at Notre Dame (with Taylor Swift's brother they are all happy to tell :lmao:). The discipline kids learn in marching band is amazing. These kids practice 8 hours/day for a month and a half in the summer, on asphalt in 95 degree heat. They work harder then any of the sports teams. They learn the importance of being on time and what one small misstep can do to the overall performance of the band--what it REALLY means to be a team member. The top 10% of our graduating class, year after year after year are ALL band kids.

I wish my daughter had marching band but we are lucky to even have a band at all. The remaining district band teacher retires this year, so we might be bandless next year.

This is so sad. There is so much data out there about how important music programs are to overall learning. One stat they had at our concert on Tuesday was that kids that are in band score over 100 points higher on SAT's then kids that are not in band (or orchestra).

We are EXTREMELY lucky to have phenomenal support from our school administration and from our community. We have the largest band program in our state. We have 8 concert bands, 4 jazz bands, a large marching band, percussion ensembles as well as several solo and other small group ensembles. Most of the honor band selections around the area are full of kids from our high school. Half of the kids in the state band are from our school. We have 3 full time band directors at our high school and 5 in each of the middle schools that feed to our high school. We are VERY, VERY, VERY lucky to have this. We have about 2000 students in our high school.

That was an awesome video! We just moved to Oklahoma this summer. We were living overseas and my kiddos were going to an American School. They had Concert Band there, but no marching band. My kids got a very good, solid musical start there... but we had NO IDEA what marching band in the USA had become!

My DS15 joined the Marching Band in August and it has been the best thing for him. Especially being a new kid, and needing to get a group of friends... band has done that for him!

Our band is about double the size of yours... I see you have 2 sousaphones marching...we have 8 and one "shadow!" Our Band Director was/is a tuba player, so that is probably why we are tuba heavy ;)

Our band is currently on their way home from their Spring Break trip to Orlando. They participated in All-American Music Festival and spent a week in Orlando. The itinerary they had was awesome and they had such a fun time!

I hope your band is able to recruit more Marchers!

There's your #1 sales pitch right there. :rotfl:

I always wonder about these statistics...is it because the smart kids are in band or because music makes you smart? ;)

Even though my daughter is a senior, I really hope they find a way to keep band next year.

I think it is some of both but the studies show that playing and reading music forms more synapse connections or whatever in the brain allowing people to use more of their brain, along the lines of an athlete using muscles in a certain way that allows them to excel in a sport.

I think a lot of what you learn from playing an instrument transfers over to study and learning habits academically as well though.

I think the BEST thing our kids learn in band is that 10 minutes early is ON TIME-after that you are LATE :thumbsup2.

Isn't that the truth??? And they keep each other accountable! Love it!! The section leaders in DS's band are on top of their peers like flies on poo. That is what makes them top-notch!!
