Reasons for NOT buying DVC?

Ok I saw a thread on the resort boards, someone was asking if there were anyone who did not buy DVC or sold thier DVC and were not happy and why. I think we can give reasons here for not buying DVC without trying to sell someone on buying. I am a DVC owner and do not plan on selling. Here are a couple that come to mind.

1. Budget will not take the payments involved.

2. Do not go to WDW evry year or every other year.

3. Want to use points to try all WDW resorts more than staying at a DVC resort.

4. Want to trade out often outside of DVC.

5. The limited timeframe. 2042 or 205?

Anymore?

very happy with off-site resorts - no need to stay on-site

almost forgot this one

no DVC resort on the monrail (or likely to be)

When you talk to "timeshare people" who are down on DVC, the main reason seems to be because DVC is more expensive than almost any other timeshare you can buy. We know that we could have gotten relatively the same amount of vacation time for less money, but the idea of "owning" at Beach Club, my favorite resort, was just so appealing that I couldn't pass it up.

Happy staying at value resorts.

Only have time to travel one week a year during the off season and happy in a studio - you'll end up with extra points (yeah right).

Usually book trips last minute.

Kids leaving the nest soon and want to travel widely to various locations.

Afraid of commitment or long term relationships.

Don't like to or cannot plan 7 months in advance.

Getting divorced.

Spouse refuses.

Hate kids and families.

Are a pervert. :o

Perhaps there are people that just don't care for the DVC resorts.
I would have bought much earlier, but I was not gung-ho enough about OKW or BWV to give up the Poly. When I saw VWL, I saw the light... ;)

I am sure there are folks that enjoy AKL, GF, CR more than they would enjoy WL, BW, BC.

Does that make sense?

You forgot one: Hate Disney, only went for the kids' benefit. Ended up at a DVC presentation because of the air conditioning.

LOL Cruella...but your reasons actually mirror the ones I was thinking. DVC is expensive, but so is staying on-site at WDW. If someone is not really sold on the feeling that staying on-site is a BIG part of their WDW vacation experience, they are bound to end up disenchanted with their purchase.

Also, I see on these boards from time to time that one spouse is dying to buy and the other one is very much against it, but eventually yields. While that anti-DVC sentiment might well disappear the first time the disgruntled spouse walks through the DVC resort door, often it can fester and end up being a sore point between the two. I would never advise a purchase of DVC with the thought that the other spouse would "come around".

Its also just human nature to feel your choices are better than the choices other people make. No matter how egalitarian I try to be, I can't help but be a little smug about my choice to buy DVC. Same with my car. My new car is much more expensive than I needed to spend, after all it would get me around just the same as if I bought another Neon, but now I have a nice comfy and sporty car and I drive down the road thinking 'heh, that guy is stuck with a neon'. The guy in the neon's probably thinking 'look at that idiot who spent way too much money on a car'. (The neon is used here as an example...I'm not picking on them nor comparing any non-DVC timeshare to them).

Besides, DVC and my new car make me happy. I'd much rather be happy than to be right. :)

If we want, we can come up with many, many other options instead of DVC. I think its just easier to define _why_ DVC is a good choice and if you don't fit most of those criteria, DVC probably isn't a good choice.

The only reason I'm hesitant about buying into the DVC is the lack of proper sleeping conditions for my family. I know some of you LOVE the arrangement that the DVC offers you, but I am just not comfortable having my children sleep on a pull-out for 11 nights in a row, year after year. We are a family of 4 and would have to spend close to an additional ten thousand dollars for the extra points to bump to a two bedroom and an additional $400 or so a year for maintenance fees to get that extra bed for the time that we vacation.

I really don't mean to offend or attack anyone personally; I realize you have your reasons why this set-up works better for you, I just think it's crazy to not have two beds in some of the 1 bedroom units.

If this is the best that the DVC can offer me, maybe the DVC isn't for us. We're still in the debating phase, but it could go either way for us right now. I am definitely not interested in the one bedroom units, but are the two bedroom units worth the cost for us? That's the question!

N.Bailey,

One thing to consider is that it is not ALWAYS going to be just the four of you.

The two bedroom units (and 3-BR villas) make for a great family getaway when others want to join you!

AND, since we still have 40 YEARS on the contracts--more in the case of SSR, your kids will be coming back with THEIR kids and you will be enjoying Disney with your grandchildren. What a great gift for you AND your children's future!!

We are getting off topic now!

Cheers,

Tom

I think it is a good point about the sleeping arrangements. I wish DVC had 2 beds in their studios and 1 bedrooms. Is OKW an exception to this? I will have to keep that in mind.

The studios at OKW have two beds (I think all, but if not, most of them). Some peole complain about it as they'd rather have a sofa instead. Can't please everyone. :)

A recent thread was people wanting bunk beds. I don't think there's an easy solution but since the new DVC resorts keep selling out so quickly, Disney has little incentive to 'change' the set-up of 1 Bed, 1 pull out sofa.

As usual you guys came up with some I have not thought of. Some I have from time to time. I can see the sleeping accomadations as a negative. So far I think we have done what I requested was just some reasons against something most of us are more than happy with. Thanks and keep them coming.

Another reason, you have other priorities for money.

Downpayment for a house or DVC?
Fund college or DVC?
Retire or buy DVC?

This may be a stretch or non-issue, but what about the location? Everything DVC is east-coast. Granted, you can trade out to more westerly/northerly destinations, but let's face it -- best value for your buck is at one of the 6 (soon 7) genuine DVC main resorts. We are only 16 hrs of driving away -- but with 3 kids, that can be a daunting task! And flying -- well, that's 5 ticket$.

I know for a fact that if we lived closer, we would have bought more pts. b/c the travel time wouldn't be so bad, and more trips would be feasible! We allot 4 days of travel to our vacation schedule now (2 down, 2 back). But with the early check-in, we may need to add another day at the beginning! :( In order to accommodate the long stays (and a 2 br for our fam) we "do the disney" every other year -- cuts our traveling in half, you could say -- and we just stay extra long! But if we lived even further away.... well, not so sure I could have convinced hubby to jump in. And at least we have family strategically planted along the route. Otherwise, the overnights along the way would be just one more expense (and let's not forget the LOVELY price of gas these days!!)

And yet another one....
Once you invite family or friends along for a trip, they suddenly become your best friends, and start planning your next trip, even if you plan on bringing other friends or family along. Once bitten by the DVC bug.
Seriously, the pullout is fine for my 4 and 6 yr. old boys now, but not for much longer. Air mattress works well, though.
From my mother....NO Food Court (she loves the things)
From my sister...NO Mousekeeping (see above)
Both of those are pluses to me, however:teeth:

Our reason for not buying was easy. We wanted to buy into Hilton Head since we go to the beach every year (Myrtle Beach). We were excited about everything until the CM mentioned that the resort was about a mile from the beach! That ended our brief affair with DVC. We are used to walking out of our condo and stepping onto the beach so it wasn't for us.

One reason I'd think twice about DVC is if all my vacations to WDW seemed to be for long weekends, and I didn't want to change my plans. Those weekend points can be killers!
