A student in my husband's class lost his home to a fire Sunday night. They lost everything including the Christmas gifts their mother had bought (single parent of two who just finished school and is looking for a job).

I bought him two sets of school uniforms today along with underwear and socks since he lost all of that. I asked his mother what he was particularly wanting for Christmas, and she told me an MP3 player. I told her that we would make sure he got that.

That said, we do several things at Christmas (sponsoring children, filling several Christmas Shoeboxes, etc.), and I've already spent most of my Christmas budget.

I know NOTHING about MP3 players. Can anybody direct me to a good purchase. Can one be bought for around $50? If not, how much will I need to spend (we will make sure he gets this regardless)? This is a 4th grade boy. I knew enough to ask whether he had a color he wanted, and she said nothing in particular.

I could sure use some help with this! :flower3:

ETA: Just found this - http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=12510088
Is it any good?

You might want to check on woot dot com. They are having a woot off today and the items are changing often. There have been several MP3 players today for around $39. What you are doing for this family is awesome!

Good luck!

It's great what you & others are doing to help this family. I know they will appreciate it.

My daughter has a 4gb Sansa Fuze video mp3 player with fm. It was $80 lastl Christmas and we got it on a black Friday sale for ~$45. They are still about the same price this year -- sales around $45. It has been a very good mp3 player for her. (She's almost 13). It has a micro SD slot for extra memory. It comes in several colors.

my DD12 has the 2nd one, the philips gogear vibe, and LOVES it. she takes it everywhere. it's a great deal for $39.88.

Thanks so much! I'll get one of the two. We want to give the mother a gift card or some cash to help too, so I would love to get a good deal on the MP3 player.

Thanks again!

Check woot.com for m3players. They have have good ones on sale. Also check buy.com too.

As for mp3payers. Sansa or Sandisk is awesome mp3players and can be had for cheap if keep your eyes peel. Sansa can wash and dryer and keep working. Would not know nothing about the wash and dry part.

:rotfl2: Sounds a little bit like my husband and the three phones he's accidentally put through the washing machine. So far he hasn't found one that holds up to it very well...:rolleyes1

I know that Walmart has Sandisk. I'll look at the Sansa too. I like the idea of getting one at Walmart because the mother can easily return it if she has a problem.

Thanks! :goodvibes

ETA: Okay, now I get it. It's the Sandisk Sansa (not two different products). I told you that I didn't know anything! LOL

I second the recommendation on the Sansa Fuze 2 GB or 4GB player. They're cheap, durable, easy to use, and have a nice little screen.

Thanks for doing something so nice for this family, especially at such a hard time in their lives. I'm wondering if the local TV news station picked up on this sad story? I'm thinking that if they did, the family would probably get a lot of help from the community...especially at this time of the year.

Another benefit to sansa is most of them work with rhapsody on the go in case they have money for that later.

Unfortunately, there is no local news station of any sort. We live in a very rural area. I'm going to talk to our pastor, and I'm sure our church will help out too. We have a local missions fund that we keep for this kind of thing.

It is a sad situation. Fortunately, the family is able to stay with their grandmother so that helps a little bit.

Several posters have commented on our doing something nice, but it's really a blessing to us to be able to help somebody else. I'm not big on presents at Christmas just for presents sake (if you know what I mean). If DH and I get each other something, it's not something big (we do like to take a trip like we're doing this year as our gift though). We really do enjoy being able to help somebody else though. To us, that's what the season is about. So I guess that in the long run, we benefit as much as they do. :goodvibes

Merry Christmas! :santa:

Apple also has refurbished ipods for sale. The small shuffle is only $39.00 including shipping. The larger shuffle is $59.00 with shipping.

I've ordered quite a few from them over the past few years and have not had any problems with them.

I also wanted to add that it's wonderful what you are doing for this family!
