Reasonable Hotel in NYC

Yes! There are great discounts out there right now.
Check out www.travelzoo.com and the NYC lodging specials.
There is a brand new Holiday Inn for $129.00 night. Also look at the Embassy Suites (lower Manhattan/might be very nice in August), The Affinia Manhattan, Affinia 50 and the Wyndham special. Many of these run only up to $159.00/night and include breakfast.
Google each hotel before booking and read the trip advisor reviews. See what people have to say about location, etc and decide which one works best for you.

Some other helpful websites:
www.menupages.com for restaurant info by area
www.hopstop.com for walking and or subway directions
www.tripadvisor.com.....make the NYC forum your friend, read what the locals advise, what is going on, restaurants, etc

Also to consider:
The Staten Island Ferry is free and a great way to view the Statue of Liberty
Both the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Museum of Natural History are suggested donation only
The Sony Wonderlab is free on a first come, first serve basis
Walking the Brooklyn Bridge into Manhattan is wonderful and free
Check out the Central Park website for any free events
Check out Bryant Park website for free outdoor movie schedule

Just wanted to let you know that I used the travelzoo code to book the new Holiday Inn and the reservation was for 2 adults 2 children and 2 double beds. When we checked in we were told that they only had a king bed available. I was told that even though I booked the room on the Holiday Inn's website, since I used the travelzoo code, I had actually gone through a third party and therefore they couldn't guarantee the 2 double beds. They said they have this problem all the time with travelzoo. I don't believe them. I think they either oversold the hotel or screwed up and didn't want to take responsibility. Anyway, if you happen to need a specific room type, I would make sure that it is guaranteed if you go through travelzoo.

I booked the Marriott Courtyard Manhattan/Midtown East for 5 nights in August for $139 a night. We've stayed here before and think it's a great deal.

Rooms are huge by NY standards...we are getting 2 queens and sofa.

Walking distance to Rockefeller Center, Central Park, Times Square and the metro is at the end of the block.

This was a AAA rate. I booked Thursday-Monday and typed in the code AY3...but I don't think you need that code.

Good luck!!

Thanks for the info I am still looking and planning this spur of the moment trip. So all the info is very helpful.

We just got back from a cruise out of NYC and a pre-cruise stay.

We decided to stay across the Hudson in Jersey City at the Westin- Jersey City.

The hotel JUST opened at the end of February and is having some fantastic deals. There's a PATH train literally steps away that takes you into Manhattan. It's a quiet, corporate area and we felt completely safe walking back to the hotel from the train at 1am.

It was nice to spend our days in the hustle and bustle of NYC and escape at night to a quieter, safer area.

The Westin had large rooms and was absolutely lovely. I think we paid around $140/night (and we had a buy two nights, get one night free promo) and for a hotel of comparable room space and "niceness" of the Westin, we likely would have paid around $400/night in Manhattan.

HTH! :)

We just got back and stayed at the Millennium Broadway Hotel for $99 a night. Used the betterbidding.com website to research and then used priceline to book. Didn't know exactly which hotel but did have a pretty good idea of which ones it could be based on our rating and area.

Thanks for the info! I am trying to plan my and my dd first trip to NY and have no idea where to start.

For a first trip, I do not recommend staying in NJ.
Travelzoo has an awesome special on the Eastgate Tower. A Jr Suite for $129.00/night. They even had suites with two queens, two twins and a sofabed for $199./night plus both rooms have a kitchen. Not that you want to be whipping up meals, but a great way to start the day with breakfast.
Hotel gets great reviews on Trip Advisor. A little tired, but clean.

Anyone looking for a room for 5 is going to need a suite. Have a look at www.radiocityapartments.com for a clean, reasonable, great location place.
The Embassy Suites downtown just had a special on travelzoo, keep looking.

Yes, I've gotten a great room on Priceline for $105.00 a night (the Omni), however, they will only guarantee a room for two people and please do your research. There are some dumps in the 3 star category. I would bid no less than 4 stars, the Omni was in Midtown East. Look at betterbidding.com or biddingfortravel.com for help.

It can be overwhelming. But please trust me, we stay in the city often, use the above websites I put in my previous posts, decide which hotel and then decide what you want to do, where you want to eat, etc.

One other site to try, is travel-ticker.com for an NYC hotel discounts.

Happy planning!:goodvibes

I agree with don't stay in Jersey City if this is your first time to NYC - it's not a place to stay if you don't know your way around and yes, I live in Jersey but in the Central part of the state.

When my DD did the Rockette Experience this past December, we stayed at the Radio City Apartments and we will be staying there again in a few weeks for our annual NYC summer trip. They are not big but are clean, centrally located (on 48th Street & Rockerfeller Center) and nicely priced. They also have a small kitchenette which is wonderful if you are staying several days. I will be staying there next summer when my DD does the ABT Summer Camp.

Have a great time in NYC - I love the City and I'm very happy that we live close to it.
