Reasonable Airfare to Hawaii?

We watched for a long time from Minneapolis. Because we wanted to island hop, that made it more expensive. We ended up with about $1000 per person in airfare. But that's Minneapolis to Kona to Maui to Minneapolis.

You should have tried that airline package we did last time. Of course, that is when it was NWA and not Delta. I don't seem to find much upside to Delta at all.

We tried. We aren't even flying Delta. They didn't have a multi island package where we wanted to go and the cheapest flight we saw was $1300 a person and had a 12 hour layover.

Naturally, our frequent flyer miles are Delta, both the husband and I fly Delta a lot for work. We seldom find them to be the best deal for vacations.

Tell me about it! I'm going to London in a couple of months, and Delta wanted 90,000 miles. I booked on American for 40,000 miles.

That's because Deltas Europe hub is Paris since they partner w AirFrance. Isn't American partnered w KLM?
Also if you wat to island hop its almost always cheaper to book interisland fares seperately and just make your mainland flight an open-jaw ... very few carriers in the last few years have found it profitable to run inter island flights of their own and instead book you on Hawaiian so its cheaper to book that yourself.

We are flying open jaw on Delta in March and booked Hawaiian separately. DH needs to fly first class because of leg problems and I never find deals on first class. You don't even want to know what we had to pay when we booked in the fall. And I don't care IF he can just stay healthy and we can GO! I need out of this winter!

KLM is owned by Air France and partners with Delta.

American partners with British Airways-Iberia Group, Finnair, Malev and Air Berlin.

The reason that they were able to get a good deal using AA miles and not using Delta miles is because Delta's SkyMiles program - approprirately nicknamed SkyPesos - sucks. American is known for having the best miles redemption program.

The problem with Delta is that they sell out their miles to so many credit card companies and other companies that they are so easy to earn and therefore devalued. American Airlines doesn't do that.

As to the OP, $850 is reasonable for Midwest-Hawaii. You'll find better deals off-season, but otherwise that is what one should expect.

I just got 689 round trip from Ottawa to HNL. Ottawa is a small airport so its odd that Michigan is more expensive. I dont know how close to the border are but did you try Toronto or other near by airports?

Someone else suggested west coast its not too bad from SFO to HNL :)

If it helps I got my ticket for a tuesday-tuesday trip in may. I read somewhere that Tuesday or wednesday are cheaper days to fly (it saved us about $50.00 by choosing Tuesday over Sunday)

Good luck!!!
ETA: We are flying Air Canada , though that doesn't help you much:(

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! We're about 4 hours from Toronto, but I just checked the price and it is still higher flying from a variety of cities nearby than flying directly from Detroit. I'll just keep checking throughout the year.

Just to put everything in perspective - even at $850, that's less than ten cents per person per mile.

Mapquest's directions take over fifteen days and include kayaking 2,200 miles from Washington to Hawaii ;)
