Im going to add 150 points to my 200 points that i now own.
The method to my madness is that i would like to take my family of five on the disney cruise. It would cost me between 6000 and 8000 dollars for just one cruise and with 350 points i could go every other year.If it was just me and my wife we could go 1 or two times a year. I think after 3 or 4 cruises it already paid for itself. Maybe im caught in the cult called disney?:jester:

Consider going re-sale- you can get about 15 to 20 bucks a point cheaper just by going to one of the sponsors of these boards. We used Timeshare Store on our second purchase (OKW) and DVC on our first, (BWV).

Also, if you want to trade out to other DVC resorts or the cruise with these additional points, think about buying the 150 points at OKW. THey have the cheapest annual maintenance fees.

We have 270 at BWV and 232 at OKW. We haven't wanted to trade out for a cruise - yet! Some will argue that trading out to a cruise is not the best use of points, but I think that if each point costs 5 bucks a year (about $1.50 in purchase price and $3.50 in annual fees) you can compare the use of points to a cash ressie pretty quickly and make your decision. Good luck!

Buy a resale if you are using the points for cruising as opposed to staying at a DVC resort. Of course most people will tell you that this is not the best use of your points but as I say they are yours and do what you want with them.

True, it is not the best use of points, but...he is weighing points vs cash for a cruise, not a cruise vs a stay at DVC.

$6,000 - $8,000 for a cruise seems kind of high to me. I see rates for Disney 7 day cruises at $600 - $800 per person all the time.

Does anyone actually pay the list prices on cruises?

I don't think the cruise is that bad a deal using your points. My husband and son and I went on the 7 day eastern carribean in hurricane season (the cheapest time) and in the a category 12 inside stateroom(the cheapest room) and it cost us $829 per adult and $399 for our child. If points are really about $5 a point, using the 2002 rate for the eastern carribean a deluxe oceanview stateroom at the same time would be $760.00 per adult (152 points x $5 a point) certaintly less than we paid cash for the inside stateroom, so go ahead and use those points on the cruise.

We plan to use our points for the cruise often too. The way I figure it, we LOVE to cruise and we would rather have put that money 'towards' buying points than to just pay for the cruise each year.

Now we only have 150 points, so we might do that thing where we use points to pay for one adult and then use cash for the rest. But still, it is how we want to vacation.

Next year we have just enough points for a 3 day cruise on our daughters' (twins) birthday and we are thinking of doing that! Then we only have to come up with airfare! So we are excited about that. If we didn't have the points, we wouldn't do it. I haven't booked it yet, still thinking it over, but we are leaning that way. You see, we already have a 'paid' cruise booked for December, so it seems crazy to book one for September too (just 3 months before) BUT since we have the points we figure we can be a little 'crazy' :p .

Go, enjoy!
