REALLY simple algebra question

What do you get for an answer to 10a/5a ?

I am reviewing an Algebra book that has the WRONG answer, LOL!

No, I think the answer would be just 2. If I remember correctly, the a's would cancel out. And also I'm pretty sure to get 10a it would be 2 x 5a. That sounds right...I should know better, I'm going to be a teacher!

Weird! Yes, should be 2 - divide both sides by 5a

2 is correct. "Algebra for Dummies" has the answer listed AND explained as 2a. I thought that I was really out-of-it when I read the "solution".

You sure that's "Algebra for Dummies" and not "Algebra by Dummies"?

The worst part of this is that I am using this book as a quick review before I take the subject matter exam for my Math 6-12 certification. Algebra is so routine to me because of my first career that I don't stop to think about things like order-of-operation or other things that are on the test. Now I seriously question the information that I'm getting from this book!

Ok what it 5q + 5q?

5q + 5q= 10q

Wouldn't 5q + 5q = 10(2q) (or however you would write it)

Had the equation read 5q x 5q the answer would have been 25q^2 (25 q squared), if that's what you mean.
