really long shot I know but does anyone know anything about washing machines?

I have a 12 year old Kenmore washer. I know, it has served its time and that is true but I need it to live for another 6 months or so. **please**

It seems to be having agitator issues.

It will go through the entire wash cycle then rinse no problem but when it is supposed to spin and get all of the water out the agitator is still agitating and getting the clothes caught up underneath it so it wont spin and then konks out. as soon as I get the clothes out it will go into spin mode.

Does that make any sense at all?


I really want a new one but I cant get one for a few more months.

Is it possible to fix this one?

Washing Machine Doesn’t Spin

If the washer seems to complete all of its cycles but doesn’t spin:

1) Be sure the load of clothes is not lop-sided. If the tub becomes unbalanced, it may spin erratically or not at all. Sometimes you can just open the lid and reposition the clothes. This automatically resets an off-balance shut-off switch. Just close the lid and retry.


2) Check the lid switch and the tab on the lid that strikes it. If the plastic tab is broken, the washer may halt during the spin cycle. If the switch doesn’t click when you press and release it, it’s probably broken. If you’re experienced at home repair, you can remove the switch, test it, and replace it if needed; otherwise, call an appliance repairperson.


3) The belt may be loose, worn, or broken. If you’re fairly handy, tighten or replace the belt; otherwise call an appliance repairperson.

4) There may be a problem with the controls; in this case, call an appliance repairperson.

Open the door and pull up on the agitator. It shouldn't move but just a little, if at all. If it moves a lot, enough for clothes to get under it, it may be that the nut that holds the agitator in place is loose.

The cup that the fabric softener goes in pulls out (pull hard) and below that is a white seal that looks like a sink stopper. Lift that out and you'll see the nut.

That might be all it needs.

Our 19 year old Kitchenaid (made by Whirlpool who makes most of Sears) still runs. And it needed just one minor repair in all those years.

ETA: Read your post again. Are you saying the agitator is still going back and forth or is it just spinning along with the drum in the same direction as the drum?

the agitator is still agitating but getting clothes stuck under it so it wont spin while there are clothes in it.

It still does the agitating thing while the spin cycle is on which is what make the spin cycle stop when the clothes are in it.
