Really, How much walking?

I love my flip flops! My dh doesn't know how I can walk all day in them. I would go barefoot if I could! (so would my dd!) :cool1:

The teens wear flip-flops and never have a problem with them. But they don't spend as much time at the parks as I do (they hang out at the pool all day). I tried wearing my flip-flops one day at the parks, and by the afternoon I was almost in tears. I usually buy a new pair of good walking shoes, like a pair of Nikes or Aiddas walking shoes, about a month before the trip. I break them in before my WDW trip.

I always wear sneaker's in the parks, Reebok, keds, or something from WDW. DD now can wear flip-flops, i have no idea how she does it! ;)

interesting since i wear slides almost every day except when i 'm at wdw( or dressed uP) and for some reason then i have to wear good sneakers and great walking socks or my feet kill me.

and walking around disney all day has to be more than 4 miles...occasionally i walk a mile down/back to the mail box and that is nothing like spending 1/2 the day at wdw( one thing different is Mickey isn't at the mail box :sad2: but really i meant walking wise)

We do all that walking and most gain lbs when at Disney.

My Teva flip flops are the most comfortable thing that I could find to wear at WDW. I took my tennies because everyone told me how much I would regret it if I didn't. I wore them a couple of times, but I always just changed back into my flip flops the second we got back to the room. I won't ever waste all of that space in my suitcases again. My last trip I got both of my dd's (3 and 7) tevas too and that is all we wore!

I would bring the flip- flops and the sneakers, but I would mostly wear the sneakers, walking too much in flip-flops for more than a day would get uncomfortable, you walk easier with sneakers!!

DH and I have been to Vegas as well......but I think Disney is alot more walking.....I thought my feet were going to fall off!!!!!

Just remember to put sunscreen on the tops of your feet if you wear flip flops! With the FL sun blasting down on the concrete at WDW and your feet out in the sun all day long you could really get ouchy! :sunny: I only mention this because my DH and I went to an outdoor restaurant last weekend and I had sandals on and perched my feet up on a stool while we looked out at the marina and I really sunburned the top of my feet - you can see the design of my sandals baked right in the top of my feet! :rotfl:

You will walk more than you thought possible. I actually got a shin splint on day 4!

We figure that we walk anywhere between 5-10 miles depending on which park we go to and how long we stay. We have found that we need to wear comfortable shoes because sandals/flip flops cause our feet to get too sore.

We did 12 miles one day. I wore a pedometer so I knew exactly how far we had gone.

Did anyone see on the Fan's Guide to WDW that they recently showed on Discovery HD that the author of the Unofficial Guide to WDW said that it's not unheard of to walk 16 miles a day?! I thought that was a bit ridiculous, but my feet didn't. I don't doubt at all that if you're in the parks open to close you're averaging 10 miles. Anyway, bring both because you never know. I walked the entire strip in Vegas in flip flops and my feet never forgave me - and that's no where near Disney standards. I found I had more "umph" in my step when I had my sneaks on. I was concerned about the look of capris with normal shoes too - I was lucky enough to find some stylish Puma's onsale and bought 2 pair for the price of one and I looked great.

Flip Flops would be ok for around the hotel, pool but I would definately not wear them at the parks because as others mentioned you will be doing alot of walking and flip flops give you no arch support and your feet are likely to be very fatigued from this by the end of the week. Plus its dangerous with the crowds, people can step on your toes and the back of the flip flops which besides being frustrating could cause you to trip and fall. Tennis shoes or comfortable walking/hiking shoes are best for the parks.

We have always taken our pedometer. We average about 8.25 miles a day, with the high always being Epcot at 11-12 miles. MGM is usally the least at 5-6 miles.

I took my Merrel sandals and tennis shoes as well as my cheapie Old Navy flip flops. I just alternated and it kept me from getting blisters. My dh, who only wore his tennies ended up with some sore feet. Go figure!

I wear my flip flops unless it is to cold. I can't stand to wear tennis shoes when it is hot out. If you are use to wearing them, it should not be a problem. I have a new pair of Tink flops that I am justing waiting to wear, come on warm weather!

My niece insisted on wearing foam flip flops a few years ago. She was very uncomfortable at the end of the day, and the plastic strap broke. At that point she HAD to go back to the room.
Not only is there no arch support, but also you have to worry about people stepping on your toes and strollers and uneven pavement (i.e. smashing your toes into concrete.) Flip flops are great to wear to the pool, and great to put on just before a ride like Kali River rapids, but I wouldn't wear them all day. If your toes get smashed, you'll be unable to enjoy the rest of your trip!
On the other hand, there were lots of people wearing crocs and more expensive sandals. (mind, you'll also se stupid people wearing high heels to the parks too!) I would say wearing more expensive sandals - like the kind with cork/arch support is a great idea! I really like not having socks on my feet the entire time, and I also like the look of sandals with certian outfits. If you have the kind of sandals with cork bottoms, not only will you get cushioning and arch support, but the added height gives much better protection from mishaps. Mine are all black from Clarks. I don't know that they have the same style out this year.

Having said all that, I still couldn't wear sandals the entire time. I think it's best to trade shoes periodically. If nothing else, it's good to let your shoes air out a bit, so you don't get fungal problems.

I can't imagine wearing anything but tennis shoes at Disney. My feet are killing me if I wear sandals around town for an entire day, which is not enough close to Disney. Speaking of which, I'm doing around a 1 mile and a half a day on an elliptical machine since it's easier on my feet. Should I switch to a treadmill in preparation for the trip, or will the elliptical be okay? I know I'm going to be sore, so I'm trying to be as prepared for it as I can be.

I would definately say flip flops are better than high heels and I have seen people in those.

We saw a several people last November in at least 6 inch heels. And unbelievably I seem to see these people mostly at Epcot, unless that's just where I notice them more. I just cringe!!!

I would start and try if you want. Are you staying on property??? If worse came to worse and your feet hurt bad enough, you could always go back and change. Let's just say that I eat at all the wonderful restaurants and never pass up dessert and I rarely come back from WDW gaining any weight.

I think it's not only one day, but like people have mentioned "by the 4th/5th day". It's the accumulation that finally gets to you. But if the flip flops work fine, it really doesn't matter, the miles accumulate no matter what you're wearing and I'm sure you'll feel it somewhere.
