I got a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ3S digital camera last year.

It looks like this:

dmc-tz3s.jpg

I've been taking pictures with it, and just downloaded them to our desktop hard drive.

Here's the question: What do I do with them now? I've heard of places like photobucket, where people load/store their pictures.

Can someone please explain to me how and why I would use that? I'd really like to learn how to e-mail and post my pictures.

Thanks . . . from a digital novice!!

(Next, I'll ask about how to actually print the pictures, since I don't know about that either . . . :rolleyes1 )

People upload their photos to share with others or to save on the bandwith of sites they post them on.

To email people your photos all you do is attach the photo to the email by clicking on attach & then browse for the photo and select it.

Printing them is simple you can just click on the image you want to print and select print.

Once you have the files on your computer you can upload the one you like to Costco/walmart/sams club/wallgreens/etc... and pick up prints at your local store.

I would also advise you to burn them to CD or DVD as a more of a long term storage vs your hard drive.

If you want to post pictures you upload your photos to the PB site, then copy and paste the URL, putting
brackets around it, and hopefully ;) the picture shows up here. Let us know how you do.

Would also like to see some of your pictures - this camera has a nice zoom and Leica lense, was thinking of getting one to keep in my purse. How do you like it?

P.S. Don't be embarrassed...

People will use a place such as photobucket.com to make it easier to have friends and family view your pictures. Think of it as an online photo album that anyone you want can look at your photo album on their computer rather than coming to your house and physically open a photo book.

Other advantages are that your friends and family can have prints made right from these sites and have the prints sent to their home.

They are easy to use. You sign up for the account, get a user name and a password. It then directs you to your page. From there you can click on the upload photos button. You will be able to download anywhere from 1 to 20 photos at a time (there are other programs that will allow you to upload all of them, but you can worry about that once you get the hang of doing a few at a time). You have to search on your hard drive by using the browse button. You'll have to know which folder you put the image files in on your hard drive.

Once your photos are uploaded to the site you can direct your friends and family to the site to view all the pictures rather than emailing a few at a time.

Photobucket has a specific information line that you can copy and then paste to a forum such as this and it will automatically link to the picture and that picture will show up in your post.

I would also strongly suggest that you backup your image files to a CD or DVD. Think of those files that your camera took as your negative from film. If you lose the image files due to a computer hard drive crash they will be gone forever, unless you want to pay hundreds of dollars to have a computer store recover the files, but even then they might not be able to recover all of them.

You can also use your image files as a screen saver. There are programs out there that will randomly select a picture to view for 6-10 seconds at a time. I have that set up on our computer in the living room. Currently have about 1200 pics that it selects from.

I love this! I have the Google screensaver, it's a free download and it has a collage option where it will randomly pick photos from your harddrive (you tell it which folders to look in) and put a white border around them, then put them on the screen overlapping each other like on a bulletin board collage. It's SO cute and a great way to actually enjoy the thousands of pictures I have taken.

Thank you, handicap!!! I really appreciate your time and explanations.

Is it easy to upload the pictures to photobucket? Do I have to have the camera connected to the computer to do that?

I'm really a novice, as you can tell . . .

It is easy.... You upload the pictures from your hard drive after you have taken the pictures from your camera to the hard drive.

Glad I could help.

For screen saver slide shows, I have specific requirements as I usually have dual-monitor setups, both at home and at work. Most screen savers don't work properly with two monitors (ie, display a different pic on each monitor.)

I either use the free version of Gphotoshow (it installs a toolbar but you can uninstall it separately afterwards) or Motion Pictures screensaver, which pans and zooms across the photo slowly. A little more eye-catching, but you never see the whole picture at once, so it depends what mood I'm in.

Those are the ways that I see (and show off) my pictures most often.
