Really bad mail trading experience! (No name mentioned)

I also agree with what Luv2Roam said.

The pin family may be the same, the rules may be the same but the mods are not. This board is not wound as tight.

Oh, Mario, I assure you that it is quite the same. The Dizpins mods can be blamed for nothing more than enforcing the same rules that you'll find on MANY other boards. You probably think that Dizpins is "wound tighter", because you see examples of moderation more frequently then here. To give you an idea of what I'm talking about, pay attention to the following daily Dizpins averages:

Page Views: 14,191
Posts: 321

With all those posts in ONE day, I'm sure you can see quite possible how busy we can be on some days. Perhaps, it's those days that stick out in your head more than others.

Like it or not, the rules are set and enforced for your safety and the safety of others. You're bound to disagree with some and agree with others. That's just how it goes....with anything!

Since you agree that the rules here don't differ much from Dizpins, how can you say that we're "wound tighter"??? When enforcing these rules, we have to use an "all or nothing" approach. We can't treat some posts different than others. Just try and imagine the uproar that would cause.

I could assure you that if we as a rule got involved in trades made we would have rules very similar to those at Dizpins. We do not however for a few reasons. One is we are not just a pin board we encourage all types of Disneyana collecting and well we would not be much of a disscusion board if we only allowed certain styles or one side of a topic to be heard. One rule we do have and we do enfource is keeping it civil. If you wish to discuss an issue than we will keep it open... If it turns in to a debate than we invite you to use the DIS Debate fourm. If it turns in to a personal attack we will close it.

We all should thank those at Dizpins and the other boards for all they do. It is a job I am sure that is very hard. While I do not always agree with everything I do respect the job the moderators do.

Remember not everyone sees the same thing...

We've established the fact that:

1. Some people are not nice traders.

2. We're allowed to gripe about it here as long as we don't mention names, but on another board we are not.

3. We're allowed to disagree with policies on this board (as one example, see Jeff's response to Matt's in the trader name thread...no big deal) without being deleted. (Matt let Jeff disagee with him and did not remove his post.) On the other board one cannot question the policies or their post is deleted. (I can't help but compare it to Cuba...lol!) As Mario mentioned, this can come across as being a more uptight level of control.

4. Some of us feel more comfortable with the laid-back atmosphere over here. It is indeed a smaller group, and perhaps that makes a difference...not really sure but it is a bit more comfortable for me personally which is why I share more personal info over here than over there. I imagine that others who spend more time posting here feel that way as well. However, the other board gets more traffic and so sometimes questions are answered more quickly.

5. We've all agreed to respect the rules on other boards, even if we don't agree with them.

6. The original intent of this post was to talk about some experiences we have all had and to do a little joking around, and not to constantly comment on other boards. But you keep steering the topic back to that, even when the thread has digressed to joking with each other.

Now back to our originally scheduled program.... :)

P.S. Why do weird numbers keep showing up in my posts?

Well....I think that we're going to have to agree to disagree on some things. I'm cool with that. It's easy for me to understand things better than most, because I'm in the middle of it all. I can give you 100 reasons why things are the way they are, but I think we've beaten it to death already. I really don't care to continue.

However, for the record:

1. You're right.

2. We tried allowing people to gripe, however, more and more, it turned so quickly into arguments that even more quickly turned into attacks. So, now we disallow it. Our choice.

3. This is just a board-specific rules thing. Some boards allow direct postings that question policies on discussion threads. Other boards have specific forums set up for doing so. Dizpins asks that you email a moderator. It's nothing more than a different spin. We welcome comments and criticism....just send it in an email. ;) We also prefer the email version, because it gives us moderators a chance to have a closer relationship with the members. Because we do have a lot to do, we NEVER want to lose the intimacy between the moderators and the members. After all, we all are part of the same community. Finally, 9 out of 10 times, an email will generate a faster response from us as opposed to a post.

4. I would certainly hope that you could feel as comfortable at Dizpins as you would here. There have been many instances where you've brought up issues surrounding your daughter and other various problems. We welcome those, and we want you to know that we, again as part of the same pin trading community, will be there to support and comfort you as it is necessary!

5. I agree.....there's obviously a mutual respect, and it's O.K. to agree to disagree.

6. I, too, have discussed experiences that I've had. My replies are based on the overall topic of the post, along with the previous response. That's not a mod thing....not a Dizpins thing....it's just a Ted thing. ;)

Alright......I'm not sure that there's much more to say about any of this. Thank you, DIS Mods, for allowing us to have this civil conversation. It was much appreciated.

Before Grandma gets mad......I better do SOME work today.......so, it's off to Cuba for me. :D (I can joke too!)

:smooth:

Hey, guess what...I got the pin today from this trader...and it's a mess!! There are black marks all over it and a nice scratch too. It is the weirdest thing I have ever seen!

I was actually expecting my pin back, because in the middle of it all (right after I got one of the mods involved) I got this very sincere sounding e-mail about how she was going to send me my original pin back to show good faith. And I also told her I would actually prefer to get my original pin back at that point. I guess I kind of thought maybe she didn't really have her pin so I would be letting her out of the whole thing.

Well, at this point I've got to let it rest because I just see it's not going to happen. I also just heard from someone else that never got their pin like six months ago from the same person. It's really too bad.

But...let's all be happy happy happy that we have real live people that we can trade with in person!! And I also have Judith! ;) :Pinkbounc

First of all, thanks to all parties involved in keeping this discussion civil :)

Trust me, nobody knows more how difficult it can be to be forum moderator than a DISboard Mod. With 48,000+ members and most of our Moderators pulling double and triple duty on our other boards and as chat hosts, it can be a thankless job at times. Not every decision you make will be a popular one and sometimes you can catch a lot of flack for it. ;)

Our Collectors Board has always been a unique area, even to the DISboards themselves. While most of our boards are trip planning oriented, the people on the Collectors Board became a close family. We are more laid back than many other discussion boards where people come and go. I suspect that in the future when pin trading is said and done  many of our members will remain friends.

While we allow our members to vent (within reason of course) when something goes wrong, some boards might not be comfortable with that type of participation. However, it is their boards and their rights to make the rules they want to follow. Of course they don't have MeanLaureen waiting in the shadows to whap you guys when you get out of line ;) (I refer you to the lump on the back of Raulandpinboy's head)

P.S. Why do weird numbers keep showing up in my posts?

Better be careful, Sharon. I've heard the Tag Fairy never sleeps ;)

I am thankful we have a place to discuss all aspects of pin trading. Learning about pin trading, the FAQs are a good start. But real world examples discussed in a positive manner serve to fill in the gaps of my knowledge. Thanks for letting this thread progress. It has made me a little bit smarter. If this thread was a few weeks earlier, I might not be a little lighter in my pin bag;-)

Warmest regards.

So, not having filed a complaint (yet) what happens now Sharon?
Is it just kinda a moot point and a done deal?
Or is the info kept/stored in private?
Can anyone see a complaint was filed against this trader?
I know it would quite a system, but would be nice if after a complaint has been filed and finished that a Unsatifactory or Satisfactory rating could be posted on the e-mail search.
Example:
(e-mail) COMPLAINT (date filed) "U" (date closed)
(e-mail) COMPLAINT (date filed) "S" (date closed)
If there are multiple complaints I wonder if anything happens?
I suspect that in the future when pin trading is said and done
BOOM! I fell over in a dead faint!!!!    :jester:

rofl!

I don't really know much about the system. The complaints are private though. I don't know what happens when someone gets multiple complaints against them. I think, though, that since that system recently got put in place, you wouldn't have been able to use it when you had your problem. One of the other people I spoke to had her problem about six months ago and I'm not sure if the complaint system was there then. So, even if a few people have had a problem with this particular person, I don't think there was a formal system in place to log it in. Again, though, I'm not sure because in a year of trading this was the first time I had to ask for outside help with something.

Let's just hope we never have to use it again!!

Amen to that, Sharon. :)

Lauri mentioned to me that when she collected Beanie Babies a few years ago, there was a web site called traderlist.com that had a database of traders with complaints as well as praises. I checked and the site is still active, although it is heavily Beanie-type collectibles with a smattering of other collectibles. I don't know if they will handle Disney pins, though.

Hmmm.....interesting idea. I don't know that something like that has ever been suggested. I'll have to talk to the PinPics staff (since we'd be the people entering the info), and see what it would take to do. Also, we have a legal consultant that we bounce things off of from time to time. We can see if anything like that is doable.

Guess we all have had bad experiences. I join the list of those who will not trade on line again. At the moment I am seriously considering giving up the trade part of the hobby all together. If it weren't for the Parkhopper meet in a few weeks I probably would quit now.

Out of ALL my hundreds of one trades, I have only actually been burned (so far) from two MoM state pins. (To the same person.)
I have had two other traders where Joette contacted the trader on my behalf. (One being there trader referred to in this thread.)
I have one now headed south, that I haop will be resolved.
I was burned by Blessed R^%$#%, as many were. Luckily, I was only out $28.
But considering how much I have traded and bought, all on good faith, I feel very fortunate.
I just hate to see anyone give up on-line trading for the reason of a handful of bad traders.

I agree. Giving up a hobby you love because of a few bad incidents is unfortunate. You may be denying other enthusiasts the opportunity to share in your passion for pin trading. That is a loss.

Posts in this thread referenced that it is more about honoring the agreement than the value of the item. I view a trade as a promise between two people. As in life, you can only control your actions and not others. As long as you make every effort meet your promise in a trade, there is nothing else a person can do. Sure, any bad trade is frustrating, but what can you do.

As for my not so happy trade experience, I plan on continuing teaching responsibility to my DD through pin trading, giving pins to children in the parks, sending pin surprises to friends, and making the occasional online trade. The few bumps in the pin trade road are not enough to change why I chose this hobby.

I hope that you should KAP, as well as anyone else, will keep giving to the hobby regardless of a bad experience. Maybe we need a T-shirt that says “Bad Trades Happen” :-)

I was not involved in this discussion originally, but I just want to thank Luv2Roam because she took it upon herself to email me to make sure that I wasn't about to make a big mistake in trading with the person who was apparently the subject of this thread - based on a post that I put on dizpins questioning whether the potential trade was fair or not. Luv2Roam put 2 and 2 together and saved me from a possibly terrible experience. Thanks so much!

I would love to trade with any of you - I have excellent references on Ebay, as well as dizpins......

check out my traders: grandcalifornian is my pinpics name.

Thanks!

-Jenn

JLS -- Glad you made it here.
And I want to thank The Dis and mods for letting us discuss these issues. I am very glad I helped someone from finalizing what could have been a major disappointing headache. :(

Score one for the good guys! Thanks for being on top of things Luv2Roam! I haven't been frequenting the dizpins board lately.
