Reality TV Show stunt - rant

DH was up in London yesterday. On his way home he said he saw a woman struggling with a suitcase up a flight of steps so he offered to help her. Once they go to the top she started yelling at him that he was a chauvenist to think women couldn't carry their own cases and accused him of looking at her chest (only she didn't use that word). He said he was shocked and just walked away from her - he was then stopped by someone working for a TV station (he thinks channel 4) who said they were filming a hidden camera show and asked his permission to show the scene (which of course he refused).

He was still pretty shaken by the time he got home an hour later. I doubt he'll try and help anyone else with a case for a very long time.

I can't see how this can be seen as entertaining!

Thanks for letting me rant - I feel awful for him.

That's terrible...it amazes me what people consider to be 'entertainment'... mind you most stuff on tv nowadays is rubbish.

I honestly think most women would have been grateful for the help (I sure would have been!).

My husband is going to add this to his ever-growing list of reasons for us to move out of London (he dislikes it here tremendously).

At least your husband is the kind of person who does volunteer to help, that says a lot about him :) I hope this incident doesn't change that about him.

Poor thing - how horrible for him! Please tell him how lovely and helpful he is and not to let stupid idiots put him off being nice ! :grouphug: to you both

I think I'd be ranting too!

I guess the TV company relies on the '5 minutes of fame' factor to pursuade the 'victims' to give their permission to air the footage.

What a shame that scene won't be shown it sounds just hysterically funny (not) :confused3

:grouphug: for you and him - it was good of him to offer to help but I suppose incidents like this do partly explain why so few people would do the same 'decent' thing in this situation now.

I'm sure I would be ranting as well.

I like reality tv but I wouldn't watch anything like this :confused3

It sounds very much like that show on BBC Just for laughs, where they set up members of the public, I can imagine how he feels, I would feel the same, :grouphug:

I was in London yesterday too and it amazes me how anyone can live there. It has my blood boiling within about 30 seconds of walking into a tube station. We'd been to a musical on Friday night and walked down into Victoria tube, within seconds I'd been knocked 3 times by people running around and not looking where they were going. How can that many people be in that much of a rush that much of the time????

So sorry for your DH that this happened to him, well done to him for saying no. I can tell you now that I've spent this week struggling around various cities with heavy bags and I would have greatly appreciated it if he had offered to help me!

Thanks for all your replies. It certainly makes him feel a lot better to know that a lot of people think that it was a stupid stunt to pull. I can't imagine how a more nervous man might have reacted to the situation or how any watching tourist would have interpretted it.

That's awful I never find those types of programmes funny or the ones where people fall off motorbikes, skateboards, ski's etc. It amazes me how low people will go in the name of entertainment. Hope your DH is feeling better :grouphug:

:grouphug: To you and your DH. I think it's awful that people are set up like this! I would have been fuming if that had happened to my DH after he tried to help someone! :furious:
